Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Matthew Broderick's film debut was in which heart-warming 1983 comedy, co-starring Jason Robards and Donald Sutherland?

Answer: Max Dugan Returns

Not only did this film feature Matthew Broderick's debut, but it also featured Kiefer Sutherland in his first film role. In the film Matthew plays Michael McPhee, estranged son of Max Dugan, who is portrayed by Robards. The film was directed by Herbert Ross, with Neil Simon writing the screenplay.
2. Also in 1983, Broderick played the starring role in 'WarGames', a sci-fi/adventure film that also featured the acting talents of Ally Sheedy and Dabney Coleman. What was the name of Broderick's character in the film?

Answer: David Lightman

Matthew plays a typical high school kid in this film who happens to have a talent for hacking computers. A lover of video games, his hacking is essentially innocent (except when he changes his grades in the school computer!) until he gets himself in trouble by breaking into the North American defense network (aka NORAD). Trouble ensues!
3. In what 1985 film is Matthew Broderick featured as a medieval thief who is accompanied at different times by the actors Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer?

Answer: Ladyhawke

Matthew plays Phillipe Gaston (the Mouse) in 'Ladyhawke'. He is befriended by Captain Etienne Navarre, played by Rutger Hauer, and becomes privy to the curse that is suffered by Navarre and his lover Isabeau d'Anjou, portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer. The rest of the film shows how Gaston attempts to assist the lovers in escaping their curse.
4. In 1986, Matthew Broderick portrayed the title character in the charming comedy 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'. Who directed Mr. Broderick in this, one of the all-time great teen comedies?

Answer: John Hughes

'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' remains a salient teenage comedy to the modern day, a timeless film that can resonate with each new generation. After all, which kid doesn't dream of playing hookey from school? The film also featured Alan Ruck as the depressive Cameron, Mia Sara as Ferris's sweet girlfriend, Jeffrey Jones as the scheming principal Mr. Ed Rooney and Jennifer Grey as Ferris's bitter sister Jeanie/Shauna.
5. Matthew played Jimmy Garrett in the lead role of the 1987 comedy/drama film 'Project X'. In 'Project X', with what sort of primate does Garrett interact?

Answer: Chimps

Jimmy Garrett becomes privy to a secret experimental project that is given the mysterious title 'Project X', involving chimpanzees that are under his care. With Teri, played by co-star Helen Hunt, Garrett gets to the bottom of this top secret project and attempts to liberate his newfound primate friends.
6. One of my favorite Matthew Broderick films is the extremely underrated 'Biloxi Blues', in which he plays a newly drafted soldier sent to Biloxi, Mississippi to receive training during World War II. Upon whose script was this movie based?

Answer: Neil Simon

Once again, Broderick finds himself working in a movie scripted by Neil Simon. This time he plays Eugene Jerome, an army private from New York Ciy misplaced in Biloxi, Mississippi. Broderick's character is based loosely on Neil Simon's personal experience, and he does a wonderful job bringing the character alive.

A very notable performance in this film is also turned in by Christopher Walken, who plays the somewhat loopy Sgt. Toomey.
7. 'Family Business' was a 1989 film that featured Broderick alongside two wonderful long-time actors. Which of the following duos co-starred with Matthew in that crime-comedy?

Answer: Dustin Hoffman and Sean Connery

Despite the appearances of Hoffman, Broderick and Connery, alongside the direction of Sidney Lumet, 'Family Business' falls short of being a great film. There are some memorable moments, however, with the great actors featured here. If anyone shines in his role, it would have to be Mr. Connery, who plays Jessie McMullen, the patriarch of the McMullen family.
8. Broderick not only appeared in 'Family Business' in 1989, but also in the excellent war film 'Glory'. In this film, Matthew plays a young Colonel prepared to lead a legion of black soldiers into battle against the south during the U.S. Civil War. What was his character's name in 'Glory'?

Answer: Robert Shaw

Not only is Broderick's performance of high quality, he is also surrounded by an all-star cast which included Denzel Washington as Private Trip (Oscar winner for 'Best Supporting Actor'), Morgan Freeman as Sergeant Major John Rawlins and Andre Braugher as Corporal Thomas Searles. This is one of the best films I have seen on the American Civil War.
9. Matthew Broderick isn't much for voice-over work, but he did provide one of the lead voices in which of these huge Disney animated hits?

Answer: The Lion King

Broderick portrayed the voice of the adult Simba in Disney's 'The Lion King'. He generously reprised his voice role for 'The Lion King II: Simba's Pride' and 'The Lion King 1 1/2' as well.
10. In which late 1990s Jim Carrey vehicle did Matthew Broderick play the key supporting role?

Answer: The Cable Guy

'The Cable Guy' was a very dark comedy, especially so far as Jim Carrey films go. Though it was rather unpopular amongst film fans in general, I found Carrey's performance to be rather amusing. Matthew Broderick does a great job of making Carrey's character look especially creepy with his straight man performance.

The film also features Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, Owen Wilson, Andy Dick and Jack Black in supporting roles, making it even more worthy of a look! Thank you for trying this quiz, I hope you enjoyed it and will try more of my quizzes in the future.
