Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tom was born in London in 1981. Along with many of the UK's Prime Ministers he was educated at which public (fee paying) school?

Answer: Eton

Eton was founded in 1440 at the behest of King Henry VI. It is a fee paying institution, open to boys only (at the time of writing - some public schools are now co-educational) who live there during term time. Many of the UK's Prime Ministers were educated there including David Cameron and Boris Johnson, and Princes William and Harry both attended the school. Tom Hiddleston attended Eton from 1994 and other acting Old Etonians are Eddie Redmayne, Dominic West and Hugh Laurie.
2. One of Tom's early roles was in 'The Gathering Storm', a 2002 television film about Winston Churchill. Which son of Churchill did Hiddleston portray?

Answer: Randolph

The film was a joint production between the UK's BBC and America's HBO. Churchill was played by Albert Finney and Clementine, his wife, by Vanessa Redgrave. The period covered is the years prior to World War II, when Churchill was not part of the government, although still a Member of Parliament.

The Churchills had only one son, Randolph, who spent a brief time as an MP himself. Hiddleston played him in the film at a time when father and son were at odds with each other, causing friction between the parents.

The other names listed are other Churchill family members.
3. In 2008, Hiddleston was cast alongside Kenneth Branagh in an English language adaptation of the novels of Henning Mankell. What was the name of the series?

Answer: Wallander

The series was the first adaptation of the 'Wallander' detective novels to be made in English - an earlier Swedish language version had been made, beginning in 1994 and a second one began in 2005. In between came the BBC series with Kenneth Branagh as Kurt Wallander with Sarah Smart as Ann-Britt Hoglund and Hiddleston as Magnus Martinsson, Wallander's junior police officers.

The original stories about this Swedish detective consisted of thirteen books about the character, published between 1991 and 2009. Four series were made in all but Tom appeared only in the first two of them.
4. In 'War Horse', the 2011 adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's story, Tom Hiddleston played Captain James Nicholls. During which war did the action take place?

Answer: World War I

The film was directed by Steven Spielberg with the main (human) role of Albert Narracott going to Jeremy Irvine. The war horse of the title was named Joey, and was portrayed by several different horses, including eight as an adult. Joey is one of the horses in a British cavalry charge which is where Tom Hiddleston appears, along with Benedict Cumberbatch, as two of the officers riding into a barrage of fire from machine guns. For the animal lovers among you, Joey survives but Hiddleston's character doesn't.
5. In 2016, Tom had a brief, but much publicised, relationship with which American singer?

Answer: Taylor Swift

The romance between Tom and Taylor didn't last very long - from around May 2016 until September the same year. There are various stories about what went wrong, with Taylor wanting to leave her previous relationship with Tom being 'available' or Tom seeming to relish the publicity while Taylor wanted to keep a lower profile.

There have been some suggestions that it was all a publicity stunt, but Tom stated that it was a genuine relationship in a 2017 interview in 'GQ'.
6. 'The Hollow Crown' was a BBC television adaptation of Shakespeare's history plays. Which of these kings did Tom Hiddleston portray?

Answer: Henry V

The filming of these plays involved a large number of talented actors to portray the various kings. In order, Ben Whishaw played Richard II, Jeremy Irons was Henry IV, while Hiddleston portrayed Henry V - these plays were shown in 2012. A second series, concentrating on the era of the Wars of the Roses, was screened in 2016 with Tom Sturridge as Henry VI and Benedict Cumberbatch as Richard III. Hiddleston appeared in three of the plays, taking Prince Hal from the callow youth who spent much time in inns with his drinking pals, like Falstaff, to the king who led English forces at the Battle of Agincourt.
7. Tom is an ambassador for which organisation, one which he mentioned in a somewhat controversial acceptance speech when he received the 2017 Golden Globe award?

Answer: UNICEF

Tom was given the Golden Globe award for his role in 'The Night Manager'. Having visited South Sudan in late 2016, he had seen first hand the suffering being caused there by the civil war and mentioned this trip during his speech. He was criticised for apparently praising himself during it, something which he later attributed to nerves. UNICEF is the United Nations Children's Fund, set up to alleviate the suffering of the youngest members of the human race.
8. Tom played the role of Jonathan Pine in a 2016 adaptation of which John Le Carré novel?

Answer: The Night Manager

The show began in the UK in February 2016 and has been screened in many other countries, many of them the same year. Tom plays the night time manager of an hotel in Cairo, which brings him into contact with British intelligence. Having moved to Zermatt, again as a night time manager of a hotel, he is recruited by them to help bring down an arms dealer named Richard Roper, played by Hugh Laurie. Among the other main actors are Olivia Colman, Tom Hollander and Elizabeth Debicki.

The plot is mainly faithful to the novel on which it is based, apart from the era, which is moved from the Cold War time to a contemporary time frame.
9. The 2015 film 'I Saw the Light' was a biography of which singer, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston?

Answer: Hank Williams

The film was written and directed by Marc Abraham. Tom Hiddleston was chosen for the role, which did not meet with wholehearted approval from some of Williams' descendants, who felt it needed a real 'southern American' to do justice to the part. The film met with lukewarm reviews although Tom himself received mostly praise for his portrayal, which included performing all the songs himself.
10. Hiddleston initially auditioned for the role of Thor in the 2011 film of that name, but the part was given to Chris Hemsworth. Tom was cast instead as which character?

Answer: Loki

The quiz title promised you Thor, so here he is. The first film in the franchise was 'Thor', released in 2011 and directed by Kenneth Branagh, with whom Hiddleston had worked previously. It was Branagh who decided Hiddleston would be a better fit for the role of Loki rather than Thor.

It has been a role which has paid dividends for Tom, and many of the other actors involved, with them reprising their parts in the sequels. The other characters listed are also from the film, and Norse mythology, with Heimdall played by Idris Elba and Odin by Anthony Hopkins. Laufey appeared only in the first film, with Colm Feore playing the part.

The films are based on the Marvel Comics stories rather than being taken directly from myth.
