Yul Brynner, Jr. was born in 1946. He now uses his nickname Rock, named after boxer Rocky Graziano.

Though Yul Brynner claimed to be of many nationalities throughout his life, his son Rock stated in the biography he wrote about his father that Yul Brynner was half Swiss and half Tatar. Tatars or Tartars are a group of people who live in what is now Siberia, Crimea, Central Asia and other areas once a part of the Soviet Union. Most are Muslim. In the 13th century Tatars played a role in the Mongolian invasions. The earliest Tatars are believed to be of Turkic origins. The last Tatar state, Crimea, was annexed by Russia in 1783.

Yul Brynner (born Yul Bryner) in Vladivostock, USSR, in July 1920 (or July 1915). His father, Boris Bryner, was a Swiss-Mongolian engineer (and the Swiss Consul-General to Russia) and his mother, Marousia Blagavidova, was the daughter of a Russian doctor. He was named after his grandfather, Jules Brynner (born Yuli Ivanovitch).
