Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. T. S. Eliot used the title 'A Game of Chess' for the second section of which of his poems?

Answer: The Waste Land

The second section of the poem contrasts women from two different classes. The first part describes a neurotic, high class woman and her plans for an excursion and later game of chess, with the second part concentrating on lower class women discussing a friend whose health has suffered from giving birth to too many children.

The poem was originally published in 1922 and is dedicated to fellow poet Ezra Pound, who helped with its editing.
2. Starring Christopher Lambert and Diane Lane, this 1992 film is about a chess grandmaster caught up in a murder mystery. Which of these names, including a chess piece, is the correct title?

Answer: Knight Moves

Christopher Lambert plays Peter Sanderson who becomes a suspect after a woman he has slept with is found murdered. He is contacted by the real killer, who tells him that the murders will continue as part of a deadly chess game. Diane Lane plays the role of a psychologist and Tom Skerritt is also in the film as a detective investigating the case. Lambert is probably best known for his role as Connor MacLeod in 'The Highlander' series of films.

The other options relate to chess moves rather than film titles, at least for the time being.
3. First shown on television on 14 January 1968, 'A Game of Chess' was part of the 'Mission: Impossible' series. Which actor played the role of James (Jim) Phelps in the show?

Answer: Peter Graves

Peter Graves appeared in every series of 'Mission: Impossible' between 1967 and 1973, before returning to the role for the years 1988 to 1990. He played one of a team of undercover agents. The episode 'A Game of Chess' involved an international chess grandmaster (another one) who was planning to steal gold from a Soviet country. 'Mission: Impossible' was also remade for the cinema, with Tom Cruise starring as Ethan Hunt and Jon Voight playing Jim Phelps in the first film in the series, released in 1996.
4. A play by Samuel Beckett, first produced in 1957, bears which chess related title?

Answer: Endgame

The play centres around a dying man, Hamm, and a world which is also in its last days. He is determined to outlive his father, and describes his efforts to do so using chess terminology, with the endgame leading to checkmate. In the play, the endgame will lead to death.

The options I gave you are all chess related, with checkmate being the end of the game, when the opponent's king has no safe move left. Capture refers to taking an opponent's piece and saying 'J'adoube' enables a player to touch his chessman to adjust it without having to move it on the board.
5. Written by Fred Waitzkin and published in 1993, this book tells the story of his son's progress at chess. For which chess genius were father and son searching in the title?

Answer: Bobby Fischer

The full title of the book is 'Searching for Bobby Fischer: The Father of a Prodigy Observes the World of Chess', and describes the progress of Josh Waitzkin as he moves through the world of chess. He eventually wins the national championship, although not without setbacks, and without becoming as reclusive as Bobby Fischer.

The book was made into a film in 1993. All the options are well known chess players.
6. The musical 'Chess' was created by Tim Rice, with music provided by the two male members of ABBA. Which of these songs is from the show?

Answer: One Night in Bangkok

Tim Rice had created the musicals 'Evita', 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat' in partnership with Andrew Lloyd Webber, but their partnership had broken down by 1981. Rice persuaded Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson from ABBA to act as his collaborators, and an album was issued in 1984, two years before the musical appeared on the stage. Two tracks became hits, with 'One Night in Bangkok' being sung by Murray Head and Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson taking 'I Know Him So Well' into the charts. 'All I Ask of You' comes from 'Phantom of the Opera' and 'Memory' from 'Cats'. 'Another Suitcase in Another Hall' features in 'Evita'.
7. The film of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' (2001) featured a giant game of Wizard's Chess as part of the security guarding the stone. Which of these characters had the expertise to work out a way across the board?

Answer: Ron Weasley

Harry had only just begun to learn chess, so Ron took the lead in planning the moves and defeating the game. Ron played as a knight, with Hermione as a rook and Harry as a bishop. To achieve checkmate, Ron had to sacrifice himself to the opposition queen, and suffer injury in the process.

This enabled Harry and Hermione to progress without him. Neither Percy Weasley nor Draco Malfoy appeared in the scene in either the film or the book.
8. 'Only a Pawn in Their Game' is a song about the death of civil rights activist Medgar Evers. It was written by which well known protest song writer?

Answer: Bob Dylan

The song appeared on Dylan's album 'The Times They Are A-Changing' and describes how Evers was killed by Byron De La Beckwith, the pawn of the title. The song's lyrics describe how the hatred between the poor whites and poor blacks was used by the government as a tactic to avoid dealing with injustices. Evers was assassinated in 1963, although Beckwith was not convicted of the crime and imprisoned until 1994 following a third trial - two earlier trials, with all white juries, had failed to reach verdicts despite almost conclusive evidence.
9. Created by David Lynch, the second series of which cult television series features a game of chess between two FBI agents, when losing a piece leads to the death of a real person?

Answer: Twin Peaks

The chess game is created by former agent Windom Earle, played by Kenneth Welsh and is played with his former partner, Dale Cooper, portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan. Cooper enlists the help of a chess playing genius, named Pete Martell, to minimise his losses and keep down the body count.

In this series, Earle is portrayed almost as Cooper's alter ego, the black to Cooper's white. Series Two of 'Twin Peaks' ran on the ABC channel between 1990 and 1991.
10. A highly seductive game of chess features in the 1968 film 'The Thomas Crown Affair'. Who plays the role of Thomas Crown, opposite Faye Dunaway, in the film?

Answer: Steve McQueen

McQueen plays the mastermind of a bank heist, with Faye Dunaway as the insurance investigator who believes he is behind the theft. During a visit to Crown's mansion, the two main characters play a game of chess, which Dunaway's character is about to win, before Crown suggests a different type of game altogether.

The scene was not included in the 1999 remake, which starred Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. A spoof version was included in 'Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me' (1999).
