Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the first film Betty made an appearance in?

Answer: Dizzy Dishes

It was released in 1930 and Mae Questel was the first person to do the voice of Betty, (although others such as Annabel Little, Margie Heinz, Kate Wright and Bonnie Poe have done the voice as well, Mae was her signature voice). Mae was also the voice of Popeye's girl, Olive Oyl!
2. Who was the actual creator of Betty?

Answer: Grim Natwick

Myron Natwick was born on August 16, 1890 and died at the age of 100. He is best known as the creator of the animated character "Betty Boop" which often in the past was credited to Max Fleisher as she debuted in his "Out of the Inkwell" series.
3. Betty Boop was first drawn as a dog?

Answer: True

Yes, Betty Boop did begin her life as a dog. Designed by Fleischer Studio and animator Grim Natwick, her first appearance was on August 8, 1930, in "Dizzy Dishes". She appeared in this cartoon as a dog character with long floppy ears and a very voluptuous human body. Soon her long ears became earrings and she was transformed into human form.

She was first drawn as a person in "Kitty from Kansas City" in 1931.
4. What date is known as "Betty Boop Day"?

Answer: August 9

5. What is the name of Betty's one and only colored cartoon?

Answer: Poor Cinderella

Betty Boop plays Cinderella in this retelling of the classic tale. It was Fleischer Studios first color cartoon and Betty's only classic appearance in color. In this cartoon, Betty has reddish-orange hair, not the usual jet-black!
6. Who was known as the "Boop-Oop-a-Doop" girl?

Answer: Helen Kane

Helen Kane was born on August 4, 1903. In April 1934, Helen Kane, whose popularity had waned since her debut in 1929, filed suit against Max Fleischer, Fleischer Studios and Paramount Pictures for $250,000. She claimed that Betty Boop had stolen her fans. Max Fleischer gave testimony that Betty Boop was not based on Helen Kane (which was untrue since she was one of the main inspirations for Betty). Five of the women who had been the voice for Betty appeared in court to deny that they had attempted to imitate Helen Kane's voice.

The judge watched and compared several of my cartoons with some of Helen Kane's films. There was testimony that the "Boop Oop a Doop" phrase came long before Helen Kane's popularity, as one witness claimed to have heard the phrase uttered in an Edith Griffith song. And on May 2nd, Paramount Pictures was able to locate a film clip of another singer, Baby Esther, who used the same phrase in a song in 1928, hence Helen Kane losing her lawsuit.
7. A carnation is named after Betty Boop?

Answer: False

A rose by any other name...is well still a rose! Still, perfectly named, the Floribunda, which is a yellow ivory edged red rose with a moderate fruity fragrance was named in honor of Betty Boop.
8. When did AMC (American Movie Classics) air a tribute to the cartoon queen titled "AMC's 65th Anniversary Salute to Boop"?

Answer: August 8, 1996

It included a marathon presentation of original 1930's cartoons hosted by noted Hollywood director, Richard Fleischer, son of Max Fleischer. The cable channel A & E also aired a "Biography" of Betty Boop in 1996, marking the first time a cartoon star had been profiled on the cable network's acclaimed series.
9. On which leg did Betty wear her garter, left or right?

Answer: left

You can see this in almost any picture that shows her legs.
10. I'll end this quiz with a question about Betty's final film, "Yip, Yip, Yippy!". Does she appear in it?

Answer: No

"Yip, Yip, Yippy!" was released on August 11, 1939 and although released as a Betty Boop cartoon, she is not in this short.
