Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Andy Fox gets stressed out one Christmas when which of her relatives comes to visit?

Answer: Her mother

Because everyone loves Andy's mother more than Andy (even Roger!), Andy always feels inadequate, as her mother seems to be better at everything than Andy is. Eventually, her mother hears Andy's feelings, and the two are able to make up after years of resentment on Andy's part.
2. Paige falls asleep while writing an essay and dreams she's in the land of what?

Answer: Animated Christmas specials

The various characters of animated Christmas specials show her the magic she's been missing by not watching them for years. She wakes up happy and full of holiday spirit. Her joy is short-lived when she realizes that she has only hours to complete her essay and that her brothers ate all Andy's cookies while she slept.
3. Jason dreams he's in "A Christmas Carol" as Jasonezer Scrooge. What horrifies Jasonezer when he sees the date on his tombstone?

Answer: He dies the day before "The Phantom Menace" comes out

Fittingly, it isn't seeing the plight of others that brings Jasonezer around. No, it's the thought that he might not live to see the next "Star Wars" movie. "The Phantom Menace" came out May 21, 1999, and Jasonezer's death date is May 20.
4. One Christmas, Marcus gets a Bladerunner X-1. What is it?

Answer: A sled

The sled comes with its own first aid kit, ejector seats, and a large operator manual, but no brakes (Marcus's father had to sign lots forms when he bought it). As they go down the hill the first time, the boys say, "May the Force be with us...please?", which is the name of the book that this strip is found in.
5. What does Jason do one Christmas just after midnight that he regrets on Christmas morning?

Answer: Opens his gifts

He gets up super early on Christmas to open his presents. His parents hear him and let him because he's enjoying himself, but when everyone else wakes up and opens their gifts, he feels left out of the joy.
6. Around Christmas, Andy drags Paige to see a ballet, which Paige then dreams about. What bothers her about "The Nutcracker"?

Answer: The ending

She's upset that the ballet ends with Clara riding off in a sleigh and that the audience doesn't see her wake up. Apparently Paige slept through the entire second act: she's describing the end of act I. Act II shows Clara in the Kingdom of Sweets, watching various dances and getting a necklace for bravery in the fight against the mice.

Then she wakes up and sees someone who looks suspiciously like the Prince on the street.
7. Jason writes about Mrs. Grinch in a series of strips. What is her "horrible, awful idea" to spring on the kids of Kidville?

Answer: Swapping their toys with dull but practical gifts

She thinks they'll appreciate the practical gifts of clothes and granola more than frivolous toys. She's wrong: they cry until she brings back their real gifts. The moral of the story is that kids deserve toys and turkey on Christmas, not socks and eggplant. The last panel shows Andy reading the story and Jason being horrified that she might change her mind and serve a less appetizing dinner.

During the series, a kid rifles through Mrs. Grinch's purse and finds lots of old "Titanic" ticket stubs. This is a reference to an older sets of strips where Andy becomes obsessed with the movie and goes to see it twice a day.
8. In one Sunday strip, what non-Christmas movie do Peter and Jason rent on Christmas Eve instead of "It's a Wonderful Life"?

Answer: Terminator 2

In widescreen VHS, no less. Roger and Andy have Johnny Mathis playing, a fire roaring, and hot cocoa to drink while waiting for a Christmas film. Unfortunately, the video store is out of that movie, so the boys get something considerably less holiday.

Interestingly, James Cameron, director of "Terminator 2", has said on the DVD that he considers his film a variation of "It's a Wonderful Life". "Cannibal Stewardess Vixens Unchained" is a fake movie from the "Calvin and Hobbes" comic.
9. One year, who dreams he's in "The Polar Express" as both himself and the conductor?

Answer: Roger

This is what happens when he drinks old eggnog. In the film, Tom Hanks plays several roles. Roger gets his actors confused and thinks that the conductor (and by extension himself) looks like Brad Pitt.
10. Jason gets the game "Doomathon II" for Christmas one year. What makes him trade it?

Answer: Andy won't stop playing it.

Andy thinks "Santa" made a mistake in getting Jason a violent video game. Jason decides to show her how fun it is by letting her play for a bit. Unexpectedly, she loves it and plays through the night. After several days, Jason trades "Doomathon II" for "Sim-Moonwalk" because, not only can't he play his own game, Andy isn't cooking or doing laundry. She got all the way to level 83.
