Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dick Tracy is returning to the city by train with Mamma under guard in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. He is bumped by a lady and spills his lemonade on her dress. The woman and her husband, a one-eyed turban wearing Yogee Yamma, claim the dress is an exclusive model and ruined. They demand one hundred dollars. The ever suspicious Tracy reluctantly pays and later has a porter let him into their room while they are having dinner. What is the first thing he sees after entering the room?

Answer: Three more 'exclusive' dresses identical to the one he just bought

Naturally, Tracy begins to investigate Yogee. Returning to the city we find Yogee Yamma telling fortunes while Tracy sets a trap. Tess Trueheart goes for a reading and fakes a suicide attempt. Yogee stops her and Tess gets his fingerprints on the gun. Tracy and Patton find Yogee Yamma has spent time in Leavenworth and is wanted in several states.
Yogee's wife is seen losing her nerve with Yogee until a strange aroma drifts around the room. She then returns to her usual compliant self.
2. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip Tracy and Pat Patton go to arrest Yogee Yamma and his wife after having discovered Yogee is wanted in several states. A strange aroma which seems to come from Yogee's watch case drifts around the room. As they try to cuff him, Yogee suggests they just sit and relax and put their guns away. What do Tracy and Patton do?

Answer: Sit and relax and put their guns away

Yogee and his wife head for the airport. The police arrive and corner Yogee on a sand hopper. Tracy opens the hatch and Yogee is pulled through. During the ensuing fistfight, Yogee opens his watch case and tells Tracy to let him go. The officers are aghast as Dick Tracy order them to let him go. They did find a small case with dry ice inside that Yogee lost in the fight. Tracy is befuddled when he returns to his senses.
But Yogee's wife was in custody. After the gas wore off, she was relieved to be rid of him and told the police all she knew about Yogee Yamma, including the whereabouts of an underground hideout.
Tracy went to the hideout, an abandoned subway, and found a skinny, unkempt, half crazed old man with balls chained to his ankles. He tells Tracy of the nerve gas he created. Its only drawback is its need to be refrigerated or it burns violently.
3. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Tracy is talking with the chained professor in his underground lab when Yogee Yamma is heard coming down the steps. Tracy hides and watches as Yogee prepares to kill the professor, whom he had promised to set free. Dick Tracy shoots the gun out of Yogee's hand, but the bullet ricochets and hits something necessary for survival in the dungeon. What does Tracy's bullet hit?

Answer: Electrical wire

This of course creates the death trap for Tracy and the professor as Yogee manages to get out the door and bar it. We immediately find the lab is surrounded by quicksand and the walls begin caving in and water runs in. Fortunately a fuel truck breaks through the road overhead and allows their escape.
The generator ran a compressor which kept the pressure high enough that the water wouldn't get in. Maybe it kept the road above from caving in too.
4. The writer of the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Chester Gould, had a trademark way of naming some of his characters starting with Frank Redrum in 1936. The professor had been kept underground out of the sunlight presumably for years. Based on that clue, what is the professor's real name?

Answer: Roloc Bard

Professor Roloc Bard was given a brand new laboratory by the authorities. Gould likely intended him to be a 'regular' in the strip. However the beginning of the next story was the last time he was seen until the 1980s.
5. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Yogee Yamma now walks into a bank with his nerve gas and is given $500,000 by the bank president. Gloating over his theft he now gets a room in a cheap hotel and a few bottles of wine which he becomes very drunk on. Passed out on his bed surrounded by his ill-gotten money, what is the fate of Yogee Yamma?

Answer: Burns to death

The nerve gas bursts into violent flame when not refrigerated, and Yogee lost his dry ice container in the fight with Tracy. "Dick Tracy" writer Chester Gould frequently showed his criminals no mercy. The sight of Yogee burning to death in his room as the bellboy stood helpless at the door recalls Karpses similar death in the hospital years earlier.
The only thing left in Yogee's room identifiable was his burned watch case that once contained the explosive nerve gas. When showed the case for identification, the professor said "Fate has freed me forever."
6. Pat Patton discovers and dismantles a bomb in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. The shrapnel inside was discovered to be linotype written in a foreign language. This leads the detectives to the only foreign language newspaper in town. The editor knows exactly who is responsible, a woman whom he fired earlier. They are informed that this woman is no ordinary woman. Using your knowledge of Chester Gould's way of naming his criminals, what woman would DARE to send a bomb in the mail?

Answer: 'Black' Pearl Erad

Tracy, Patton and Roloc Bard call on her. She immediately pulls a gun and rakes a 'ka-wag' across Tracy's cheek, leaving three jagged gashes. Roloc Bard escapes and goes to the Chief.
Black Pearl reminds me of a more-endowed Olive Oyl. At her proving grounds in the mountains all of her henchmen go shirtless and wear berets. Her main minion, Horace, is the best designed and certainly meanest looking character of the lot.
7. Black Pearl shows Dick Tracy and Pat Patton a model of a war weapon she is working on in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. Keeping in mind World War II had started and many weapons were believed to be impossible before then, what was the (still) impossible weapon Black Pearl was testing?

Answer: A tank which could go underwater and fly

Somewhat fantastic even for a comic strip. She then ordered the detectives to put their heads together so she would only use one bullet as she put the gun to their heads. Dick Tracy suggested two murders wasn't worth the price of an untested machine. Black Pearl then relented and decided to use them to test it.
This is similar to Ian Fleming's novel "Goldfinger" where James Bond is strapped to a table with a diamond tipped circular saw edging between his legs. Nearing panic, he offered to work for Goldfinger, which saved his life. It just happened Goldfinger needed some help just then.
The movie version updated the saw with a laser and included one of the best lines in the Bond series.
Bond: "You expect me to talk?"
Goldfinger: "No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!"
8. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Dick and Pat are testing an underwater tank in Black Pearl's hidden proving ground. As they crawl along the lake bottom, they cross a steel water line. Tracy gets a hammer and begins pounding on the tank. Some distance away in a water treatment plant one of the workers hears "them dot-dash things". What was he hearing?

Answer: Morse code

They alerted the police who began assembling outside the gates.
A top hat wearing, bewhiskered foreign dignitary was occasionally shown watching the tests, offering Black Pearl millions if the machine worked properly.
9. Black Pearl's machine had passed nearly every test. There was one last test she wasn't sure about. Actually she planned to rid herself of Tracy and Patton during the test. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, what was the last test she was so hot on for her tank/sub/airplane?

Answer: Flame throwing tank

Tracy and Patton are in danger of being burned to death inside the tank by the flame thrower and head underneath the lake to escape. At the same time the police shoot their way into the compound and the flame thrower turns on them. A very well written battle follows, probably the strongest and most believable part of the story.
10. During the last test of her tank, Tracy and Patton went underwater to escape the flames. The police burst through the gate and a battle ensued. The foreign dignitary with the whiskers chuckled at the whole affair and followed Black Pearl and Horace to their underground hangar as they made their getaway. Upon being told that he couldn't go with them, he pulled a gun and took off his disguise. Who was this G-Man whom had been used by Chester Gould in a few stories years before?

Answer: Jim Trailer

This story certainly read better daily in the papers than all at once. It lacked many aspects of a Dick Tracy story, most notably a memorable villain. Although Black Pearl was a very strong willed woman with huge cash reserves to test her machines on, she is overshadowed by Horace.
