Disney California Adventure Trivia Quiz

I noticed a dearth of questions for the second theme park at the Disneyland Resort, Disney California Adventure (DCA), so I made this quiz. If you know Disney, the questions shouldn't be too difficult even if you've not been there.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did Disney California Adventure (known by Disney park fans as "DCA") open?

Answer: 2001

The park opened to the public officially February 8, 2001 as Disney's California Adventure. It was originally slated to be a west coast version of Epcot to be called Westcot, but the projected budget to build the park was more than then CEO Michael Eisner wanted to invest after the Euro Disney financial disaster. Any Westcot items are in big demand by Disney memorabilia collectors.

An interesting note: DCA was rededicated in 2012 and it was decided to drop the apostrophe "s" off the name - "Disney's" became "Disney". Why they felt the need to do that is a mystery to me.
2. One part of the park features the attractions Luigi's Flying Tires, Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, and Radiator Springs Racers. For which Disney/Pixar movie is this land named?

Answer: Cars

Car's Land was opened in conjunction with he park's rededication in June 2012. It features an "E-Ticket" attraction "Radiator Springs Racers".

As for "Up" and "Ratatouille", they are Disney/Pixar movies, but they have no area named after them.

"Shrek" is neither a Disney/Pixar movie nor an area at DCA.
3. What is the name of the roller coaster dominating the skyline in the Paradise Pier area of the park with the huge Mickey Head?

Answer: California Screamin'

The attraction is the first loop coaster ever put in a Disney theme park. "Rockin' Rollercoaster" at Disney's Hollywood Studios has corkscrew twists, but no loops.

Expedition Everest is at Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World. Goofy's Sky School is a small coaster at DCA. Jumpin' Jellyfish is a small drop ride at DCA.
4. Popular attraction alert! You soar over California scenery on a hang glider from the mountains to the ocean. You can even smell the scenery too. Watch out for the golf ball! Which attraction did I just describe?

Answer: Soarin' Over California

Soarin' Over California is one of the best designed Disney park attractions ever, at least in my humble opinion. The technology was inspired by one Disney Imagineer's old "Erector Set" toy. There is the exact same attraction at Epcot, but when it opened in 2005, it was called "Soarin'" only.

Big Thunder Mountain is found at both Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom parks.
The Golden Zephyr is a "swing" ride at DCA.
I made up the name "Flying Freely".
5. What "land" at DCA has the 4-D movie "It's Tough to Be a Bug"?

Answer: "a bugs land"

"It's Tough to Be a Bug" first opened at Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

Condor Flats is where you'll find Soarin' Over California and is themed to salute California's role in aviation history.

Pacific Wharf is themed after Monterrey and San Francisco's old wharf areas. It is mainly an eating area.

Grizzly Peak is where the you find the mountain icon for DCA and the popular raft ride Grizzly River Run.
6. Found at Paradise Pier, what is the name of the "nighttime spectacular" that debuted in 2010?

Answer: World of Color

The show features nearly 1,200 fountains plus lasers, mist screens a la Fantasmic, lights, and fire, amongst other effects.

Fantasmic debuted at Disneyland in 1992 and later became part of Disney-MGM's Studio, now called Disney's Hollywood Studio.

The Main Street Electrical Parade actually played at DCA in some of its early years, though they did drop the "Main Street" part.
7. What is DCA's "Main Street" called?

Answer: Buena Vista Street

Hollywood Boulevard is an area of Disney's Hollywood Studios park at Disney World, named after the real street in Hollywood California.

"77 Sunset Strip" was a 1960s American TV show. Harbor Boulevard is the street where the Disneyland Resort is located.

Buena Vista street is also the street in Burbank, California where the Disney Studios are located.
8. At DCA, what is the name of the large Ferris Wheel with a famous mouse's face on it?

Answer: Mickey's Fun Wheel

Mullholland Madness is a retired attraction at DCA. Luigi's Flying Tires is located in Car's Land and opened in June 2012. I made up the name "Minnie's Spinner".
9. The "Tower of Terror" is a free-fall ride that features an elevator gone haywire. What classic American sci-fi television show makes up the first part of the attraction's name?

Answer: The Twilight Zone

When you enter the lobby, you see Rod Serling narrating the story of the hotel on a vintage TV.
"The Outer Limits" was a sci-fi 1960s American classic that familiarly resembled the "Twilight Zone". I especially loved the "Zantis" episode when I was a kid.
"Lost In Space" was a 1960s American TV show, it was set circa 1997! Danger, Danger!
"Gilligan's Island" was the campy US sitcom in the 1960s about seven stranded castaways.
10. A nod to the early days of DCA. The only "dark ride" at the opening of DCA, this ride zoomed you from Los Angeles Airport (LAX) to your premiere at "Superstar Studios". Along the way you went through famous locations such as Beverly Hills and Malibu. Also, you saw diverse "stars" along the way like Drew Carey and Cher. What was this "retired" attraction named?

Answer: Superstar Limo

"Superstar Limo" was one of those attractions that was so bad that we liked it! You know, kind of like those 1950s sci-fi B movies. It only lasted about a year before being closed. A few years later, it became the attraction "Monsters Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue".

"Journey Into Imagination" was changed to "Journey Into Your Imagination" at Epcot. "Mulholland Madness" changed into "Goofy's Sky School" at DCA. "If You Had Wings" was eventually changed to "Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin" at Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom.
