Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who created horse diving?

Answer: William Doc Carver

William originally had a Western show. He got the idea for horse diving from a stunt in that show.
2. Which is not a way horses dived?

Answer: sticking legs straight down

The horses had different styles of diving. Some ran straight off the diving board and some stopped there and waited a little bit before they dived. Some dived in a jumping position and some spread their legs out.
3. Horse diving was suspected of animal abuse. Was any evidence found?

Answer: No

Some people suspected that the show was abusing the horses. For that reason, people stopped going to the show and it was canceled.
4. Did both horses and riders get injured when diving?

Answer: No

Some riders got injured from diving, but no horses were ever harmed. This isn't horse racing, where it is common for horses to break their legs.
5. How often did Lorena Carver say she got a broken bone?

Answer: once a year

Doc Carvers daughter Lorena was a diving girl untill 1930 when she got to heavy. She stated that "all the girl has to do is look pretty and not fear height or water. . . . The horse knows what to do. He'll take care of you."
6. One of the diving girls married the son of the original host and creator of the show.

Answer: True

Sonora joined the show at the age of nineteen. She later married Doc Carvers son, Al. This made her his daughter-in-law.
7. What sense did one of the girls lose due to a diving injury?

Answer: sight

After seven years of diving, Sonora hit the water with her eyes open and became permanently blind. She was able to dive blind for eleven years. Then the show ended.
8. What is the title of the movie made about horse diving?

Answer: Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken

It was mainly based off of Sonora and some things were changed to dramatize it, but most of it is accurate. It just doesn't cover the end of horse diving, when wild hearts were probably broken.
9. What is the title of Sonora's autobiography?

Answer: A Girl And Five Brave Horses

This is a true story of Sonora and her life as a diving girl. Her writing was assisted by Elizabeth Land.
10. What quote was said by Arnette Webster?

Arnette Webster was Sonora's little sister. She joined the show and made her first dive when she was fifteen. She also stated "We didn't want to give it up."
