Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Flowers In The Rain" is widely known as the first record played on Radio One, way back in 1967 by Tony Blackburn. Which radio station did Blackburn leave to join Radio One?

Answer: Radio London

Blackburn made his first radio appearance on pirate station, Radio Caroline South in 1964, broadcasting from international waters off the coast of Frinton-on-Sea, Essex aboard the ship MV Mi Amigo. In 1966, he jumped ship, and moved to Radio London, which broadcast from the same waters as Caroline, aboard the MV Galaxy.

When the Marine Broadcasting Act came into effect on 14th August 1967, effectively making pirate radio illegal, Blackburn joined the fledgling Radio One, and made history with "Flowers In The Rain" on September 30th the same year,
2. Which former Radio One DJ and hero of my youth, was born Richard Anthony Crispian Francis Prew Hope-Weston and also acted as DJ at several of the annual "Monsters of Rock" festivals held at Donington?

Answer: Tommy Vance

The story of how Tommy Vance came to be is pure rock n roll legend, and could almost be a scene from a "Spinal Tap" type movie. A young Hope-Weston moved from UK to USA and joined radio station KOL Seattle, shortening his name in the process to Rick West.

He moved to Los Angeles in search of a new challenge and was offered a slot with KHJ radio, which West accepted. The only problem was, the show had been planned for a different DJ, who had quit shortly before the show started and the radio station jingles had already been made, so West simply changed his name to match the jingles and Tommy Vance was born.
3. At 11 o'clock each weekday morning, radios in factories throughout UK would be turned up, in order to hear this often tear inducing segment of the Simon Bates show on Radio One. What was this feature called?

Answer: Our Tune

Our Tune was a big part of Radio One in my youth, when the normally upbeat sounds of the charts would temporarily cease while Bates read out a letter from a listener about a life event such as a wedding, a birth, a death in the family or a painful divorce, or occasionally all four in one person's letter, followed by the playing of their special song.

These ranged from Whitney Houston's, "I Will Always Love You" for a partner taken too early after a whirlwind romance, to Guns n Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine" for a kid that had battled cancer.

The vast majority of the endings to the tales were sad and some days, grown adults everywhere could be seen wiping tears as the song played.
4. Former DJ for Radio Caroline, both North and South, Dave Lee Travis, joined Radio One in 1968 and worked through the unsociable hours shows until he was given the flagship breakfast show in 1978. What was his nickname and jingle on this show?

Answer: The Hairy Cornflake

Heavily bearded Travis spent over two years as the Hairy Cornflake before moving to an afternoon slot and then a weekend morning show during which he would have contestants via a phone line play snooker on the radio. It sounds bizarre now, but this was cutting edge radio when I was a kid.

In 2012, Travis became one of the many people arrested by police investigating the Jimmy Savile, Operation Yewtree case and was charged with fourteen historic sexual offences. It took two years for the case to come to trial, where Travis was found not guilty of 12 of the charges and the jury were unable to reach a decision on the other two.
5. Who joined Radio One when he was just 24 years old, took over the weekday early evening show after just a year, and within three years was the regular top 40 chart show presenter? It was on this show he famously played the unedited version of "Killing In The Name" by Rage Against The Machine in 1993.

Answer: Bruno Brookes

Unfortunately for Brookes, the unedited version of "Killing In The Name" contains 17 instances of the f word, and as he didn't have his headphones on while it was playing, he didn't realise his mistake until the switchboard began lighting up. In total 138 calls of complaint were made within minutes of the record ending, and the incident has become one of the most remembered Radio One mistakes.
6. Who has published books of his own poetry, as well as writing a biography of poet Rupert Brooke but will always be remembered as the breakfast show DJ that stopped playing "Relax" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood in 1984, because he had decided the lyrics were obscene?

Answer: Mike Read

Read joined Radio One from Radio Luxembourg in 1978 and presented the late evening show prior to John Peel's show. He was soon offered the breakfast show and presented this for almost five years. He was a regular presenter on TV show "Top Of The Pops" and also hosted "Pop Quiz" on TV from 1981 to 1984, which featured many of the big music stars of the time answering music trivia questions.
7. Canadian born, David Jensen joined Radio One from Nottingham station Radio Trent in 1976. By what nickname was Jensen known for most of his career?

Answer: Kid

Jensen started his broadcasting career in Canada aged just 16 and joined Radio Luxembourg aged 18. His tender years prompted his fellow DJ's to call him Kid and the name stuck. When he originally started on Radio One, his show was billed as "The Kid Jensen Show" and even though it changed to "The David Jensen Show" in 1981, he is still referred to by many as Kid, over 40 years after his Radio One debut. Jensen left Radio One in 1984 to become the chart show host for independent radio.
8. Which Radio One DJ was not only known for his studio show, but also for his outside broadcasts, particularly with the Radio One Roadshow, with which he was heavily involved during his 11 years at the station?

Answer: Peter Powell

Powell joined Radio One from Radio Luxembourg in 1977, although he had done a brief stint at the station five years earlier. His early evening show with it's chart recap, brought many listeners the first chance to hear the new charts as they were traditionally announced at lunchtime on Tuesday's when the younger audience was in school. Powell was a regular fixture on the Radio One Roadshow, which saw the station broadcast live from coastal resorts around the UK each summer, to huge crowds and listening figures.
9. Sid the manager, Gervais the hairdresser and Mr. Angry were all characters on whose Radio One weekday afternoon show?

Answer: Steve Wright

Steve Wright and his posse were the first time the "zoo" radio format had been heard on UK national radio and it made a big star of Wright as well as some of the posse, such as Comedy Dave who assisted him with the mayhem that was going on in the studio. "Steve Wright In The Afternoon" was on air from 1981 to 1993, when Wright moved to the breakfast show.

This early morning slot was not as successful for him and he left Radio One in 1995.
10. Who, in 1970 became the first female presenter on Radio One and in 2018, aged 78 was still presenting a weekly show on the station, featuring new EDM (Electronic Dance Music) as well as DJing at festivals around Europe?

Answer: Annie Nightingale

I will always be thankful to Nightingale as she was the DJ that introduced me to prog rock back in the 70s. In the late 70s, she became the presenter of "The Old Grey Whistle Test" on TV, where she continued to champion prog rock but also introduced countless new punk and new wave artists.

By the early 80s, she had become my Sunday evening companion as she presented her request show while I got everything ready for a new week at school. This show was originally commissioned for three months, but Annie was so popular, it ran for 12 years and in 2007, for the 40th birthday celebrations of Radio One, she presented a special one off edition of the show, looking back on some of the highlights.
