Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did the Fasnaucht family open Funland?

Answer: 1962

The family was staying in nearby Bethany Beach in August 1961. They made a visit to Rehoboth Beach and stopped in a little park. When they where speaking to the the owners, the Dentino family, Mister Dentino found out that the Fasnauchts owned a small amusement park in Pennsylvania and inquired if he would like to buy it. One year later, in 1962, they reopened the park that they had purchased as Funland.
2. What was the name of the park before it became known as Funland?

Answer: Playland

Playland had been the name prior to Funland. There is an arcade right up the boardwalk from Funland named Playland. It is not owned by the Dentino family or connected in any other way. Dolly's is a candy company famous for their salt water taffy. Jungle Jim's is a mini golf, go cart track and water park found right on route 1 going into Rehoboth Beach. Lastly, Midway Mania is just part of the name for Walt Disney World's (as well as Disneyland's) Toy Story Midway Mania.
3. What Pennsylvania small amusement park did the Fasnaucht family own prior to Funland?

Answer: Willow Mills

It was a small family picnic type of amusement park. It was in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Sadly it is now defunct along with the other three parks listed: Williams Grove (it was the last of these parks to close, it closed forever in 2007), Luna Park (there were three parks in Pennsylvania that had this name and all are long gone now) and lastly Fantasyland disappeared in the early 1980s.
4. What event almost ended the Fasnauchts' bid to buy Funland?

Answer: The Great Atlantic Storm

The Great Atlantic Storm of 1962 ripped up a majority of the East Coast's coastal region. The storm struck on March 6th. The finalization of the deal to buy Playland was set to happen March 15th. The Fasnauchts, much to their credit, did not back out of the deal with some price adjustment from the Dentinos for the damage to the building and loss of several rides (things like the bumper cars were washed out into the ocean).

Despite this horrible storm they managed to open this park for the summer of 1962.
5. Funland has bumper cars like many amusement parks. There is something different about theirs, what is it?

Answer: They are powered through the floor

Unlike most bumper cars which get their power through a rod that rubs against a powered grate on the ceiling of most bumper car attractions, the bumper cars are powered though the floor. This one has power strips that run across the ground. This is a safer method as there are no sparks when the cars collide. Spaceships and Demolition derby cars are just things that I think would be nice to have like bumper cars.
6. What is the name of the park's haunted house attraction?

Answer: Haunted Mansion

Much like the famous attraction at Disneyland (as well as at Walt Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland), its name is the Haunted Mansion. It has no connection to the famous ones rather it just shares a common name for haunted house attractions at other amusement parks. Phantom Manor is Paris Disneyland's version of the Haunted Mansion from the other Disney theme parks, but that's for another quiz and another time.

As for Seaside Haunts and The Spook House, they were names that I liked.
7. What is the color of the Funland ride tickets?

Answer: green

The Funland ride tickets are and have always been green. Orange is the color of the game tickets. Red and blue are colors of other local arcade game tickets.
8. What original Funland rides are functioning the same as from opening day? Hint: These rides all predate the park even being Funland.

Answer: Boats, Fire Engine, Sky Fighter, Helicopters, Carousel

The original rides that are in Funland from opening day are: Boats, Fire Engine, Sky Fighter, Helicopters, Carousel. All these rides actually predate the park even being Funland. The Carousel has had some remodeling over the years. Some may say what about the Bumper Cars? Well, while these rides may have been there since the start neither one is the original that was there on opening day.
9. Is there anything other than rides that can be found at Funland?

Answer: Yes, there are video games, pinball machines, games of skill and chance

There are indeed video games, games of skill and chance such as "Skeeball" and "Frog Bog" as well as many more and several claw games like at any other amusement park. They have the latest in video games and pinball machines. They also have an old-fashioned shooting gallery.

The mini golf on the roof is next door at Ryan's Surf Side Arcade it's called Ryan's Mini Golf. Ryan's is almost as well-established as Funland and has been there since the 1970s. As for the restaurant there is no restaurant at Funland.

As a matter of fact, until 2009 there were only a few soda machines and one ice cream machine along with a crane game that you played for candy. However they added a popcorn stand with drinks in 2009.
10. What is the mascot of Funland?

Answer: A clown

A clown head once adorned the side of the Funland building for many, many years and was (and is) the mascot. The clown head now adorns the side of Jungle attraction for kids. As for the pirate, Funland does have a pirate and it used to be in the tower of the building looking out at the sea. Both the clown head and the pirate were remove from their spots during the last remodeling of the Funland building's exterior.

The pirate can now be found on the inside on a stairwell up high near the boats and fire engines look for them next time you are there.

As for the mouse, well, that is another famous chain of parks' icon.
