Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Angel
Answer: Candy Southern
Angel, as a founding member of the X-Men, had a crush on Jean Gray for a long time. Later in the comics Candace "Candy" Southern was introduced as his love interest. Angel was also known as Warren Worthington III.
Candy, created by Roy Thomas and Werner Roth, made her debut in the 31st issue of "X-Men" in 1967.
The character of Angel appears in the original "X-Men" movie franchise as well, but Candy wasn't in that trilogy at all, so no help for those who didn't read the comics.
2. Superman
Answer: Lois Lane
Superman and Lois Lane have a love for the ages. Over the more than 75 years of publishing history, they have dated, been married, and had just about every other relationship status you can think of as well. Lois debuted in "Action Comics #1" along with Superman in 1938.
While Lois Lane debuted in the comics, she has been Superman's love interest in newspaper strips, radio shows, and multiple television shows and movies. The relationship was especially on display in "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" which showcased them much more than his powers over the four seasons the show ran. Dean Cain and Terri Hatcher played the roles on "Lois & Clark".
3. Hawkman
Answer: Hawkgirl
Carter Hall and Shiera Sanders are destined to be apart. They both have the powers of the hawk, but thanks to a curse, can never be together, at least not for long. In some iterations they can never be together, in others, they always end tragically in death before being reborn. Throughout the Golden Age of DC Comics, when the characters debuted (In "Flash #1) in 1940, Carter and Shiera were the reincarnated versions of ancient Egyptian lovers who had been murdered. Once reincarnated they joined the Justice Society of America together.
One of my favorite tellings of their love is from the "Smallville" episodes that were titled "Absolute Justice". It told the tale from Carter's perspective as he sought out his love. Carter was played by Michael Shanks in that performance.
4. Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel)
Answer: Captain Mar-Vell
Captain Mar-Vell, known by the alias of Dr. Walter Lawson made his debut in "Marvel Super-Heroes #12". Carol Danvers, who would later be known as both Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel, made her debut in the next issue of the same title.
He served as a love interest for her for a while, despite being a Kree and she being human. Eventually, she was granted powers and became the hero, and he became a rarely used afterthought in the comics.
5. Thor
Answer: Jane Foster
Thor is a character that goes back thousands of years, but he debuted in Marvel Comics in "Journey into Mystery #83" in 1963. His love interest, Jane Foster, debuted the next book.
Decades later, during a time when Thor was deemed unworthy of his powers, they were stripped from him and a woman took his place. After a while, it was revealed that despite her being sickly and on her death bed, it was Jane who took over the mantle. With his powers, she was able to be a hero with them.
For fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor (Played by Chris Hemsworth) and Jane (Played by Natalie Portman) met and fell in love in "Thor" where both characters made their MCU debut. At the time in the movie, Thor wasn't deemed worthy of his powers and litterally couldn't lift his hammer until meeting her and proving his worthiness.
6. Janet van Dyne
Answer: Hank Pym
Janet van Dyne, AKA The Wasp, made her comics debut in "Tales to Astonish #44" in 1964. Hank Pym, AKA both Ant-Man and Giant-Man, made his debut in "Tales to Astonish #27" a bit more than a year earlier.
The two were both heroes, but only Janet's suit had wings and granted her the ability to fly. Hank designed both suits.
While it's in the comics where this relationship was most in depth, including showing off Hank's drinking problems, movie fans got a chance to see it too when Janet van Dyne was in the end of "Antman and the Wasp" in 2018. Hank was a main character in both "Antman" and the sequel, while Janet was talked about a lot but only appeared briefly in the end of the second movie.
7. Dr. Strange
Answer: Clea
Clea debuted as a love-interest for Dr. Strange in "Strange Tales #126" in 1964. Dr. Strange made his own debut in "Strange Tales #110" the year before. Clea served as only one of many love interests for Strange over the years.
At one point in their history, they traveled through time together and she cheated on him with Ben Franklin.
8. Iron Man
Answer: Pepper Potts
Iron Man made his comic debut in "Tales of Suspense #39" in 1963, it took Pepper Potts a few months to join him, making her debut in #45 of that book later in 1963.
Despite Tony Stark being known as a billionaire playboy, his love of Pepper is strong. Even when they are depicted as not being together he always is shown to trust her.
Pepper Potts is one of the most powerful women in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite having no powers. She gained her status when Tony Stark signed over control of his company to her, making her the CEO. At the time he and Pepper were in love, but not married. At one point in "Iron Man 3" she did suit up briefly in one of Tony's extra Iron Man suits though, making them both (albeit briefly) able to fly.
9. Silver Surfer
Answer: Shalla-Bal
The herald of Galactus first appeared in "The Fantastic Four #48". His back-story being that he became the Silver Surfer in an attempted to save his homeworld from being destroyed by the devourer of worlds.
Shalla-Bal made her debut in the comics in "Silver Surfer #1" in 1968.
10. Johnny Storm
Answer: Dorrie
Johnny Storm, AKA The Human Torch, made his debut in "The Fantastic Four #1" in 1961. Over the years he has been shown to have multiple love interests, Dorrie was just one of them.
She first appeared in "Strange Tales #113" and was featured in books through "Fantastic Four #45" before mostly disappearing from the comics.
