Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is alopecia areata?

Answer: Hair loss.

Alopecia is usually characterised by patchy hair loss, usually on the scalp but can occur anywhere on the body. It often clears up spontaneously but can cause great distress to the sufferer.
2. Each hair shaft is made up of three concentric layers. They are the cortex, cuticle and which other layer?

Answer: Medulla

The medulla is the innermost layer of the hair shaft and is unaffected by hair products such as colours and perms. The cortex surrounds the medulla and is, in turn, surrounded by the cuticle layer.
3. Canites is a term meaning what?

Answer: Grey hair.

Canites is quite simply the term given to grey hair.
4. Hair goes through resting, growing and falling out phases. These phases are known as Anagen, Catagen and which other name?

Answer: Telogen

The Anagen phase is when the hair is actively growing, Catagen is when the hair dies and falls out, Telogen is the resting phase before growth begins anew.
5. What often causes excessive thinning of the hair?

Answer: All of these.

Unfortunately if your hair has thinned due to hereditary factors, the chances are you're stuck with it unless you take extraordinary measures such as hair transplant. The good news is that if it is due to lack of iron or a thyroid problem, the hair loss can often be reversed. If you feel you've lost an excessive amount of hair in a short period, see a medical practitioner.
6. There are different types of bonds in the hair. Which type of bond needs to be broken and re-formed during the perming process?

Answer: Disulphide

Perm lotion softens and breaks down the disulphide bonds in the hair so that they can be re-formed in a different shape by the neutraliser, thereby creating curls. Permanent straightening of the hair is essentially the same process although with the opposite result.
7. Which layer of the hair structure contains pigment cells?

Answer: Cortex

The cortex contains the natural pigments of the hair and is where changes are made to that colour through the process of demi and permanent colouring.
8. What is another name for dandruff?

Answer: Scurf

Psoriasis is an auto-immune disorder, Eczema is usually caused by allergies and Scurvy is caused by a lack of vitamin C. Dandruff or scurf is characterised by an overproduction and shedding of skin cells.
9. There are three different types of hair found on the human body. Which type would you find on your head?

Answer: Terminal

Lanugo hair is found on the bodies of unborn babies and has usually fallen out a few weeks before birth, Vellus hairs are the fine, soft hairs found all over the body and Terminal hairs are those on the scalp.
10. Which chemical element is never found within the structure of normal, natural hair?

Answer: Argon

Hair usually has carbon, iron, phosphorus, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur. The quantities of each differ from person to person and are affected by age, gender and ethnicity.
