Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first year that Universal Studios Florida held a Halloween event?

Answer: 1991

After seeing Knott's Berry Farm in Southern California become the undisputed king of haunted attractions since 1972 with Knott's Scary Farm and "The Haunt", Universal jumped into the fray in 1991 to unleash their horror legacy on the public.
2. Universal's Halloween haunt has always been called Halloween Horror Nights.

Answer: False

For the first year only, the event was called Universal's Fright Nights and was held for only three nights in October.
3. What was the name of the event before it was called Halloween Horror Nights?

Answer: Universal's Fright Nights

For the first year, the event was called Universal's Fright Nights and featured one haunted house called Dungeon of Terror and four Halloween shows. Or course Howl O'Scream is Busch Garden Tampa's annual haunt.
4. 1n 1992, the event's T-shirt logo was very unique. What was the design?

Answer: Chainsaw cutting through a pumpkin

The design used in the first year the event was called Halloween Horror Nights, and its logo was a chainsaw hacking through a pumpkin. A favorite by many fans.
5. In 1995, Universal used a commercial, main stream character for its mascot. Who was it?

Answer: The Crypt Keeper

The Crypt Keeper from the popular TV show "Tales From the Crypt" was the mascot. One of few main stream, non-original mascots Universal has ever used.
6. Each year park guests get the heck scared out of them by the most revered of all haunt toys, the Chainsaw! Back when the event was over at Universal Studios, this group of "scareactors" had a nickname. What were they called?

Answer: The Chainsaw Drill Team

Many scareactors each year pray to be cast in this role and the old Chainsaw Drill Team did the job like no one could. They would gather in the streets of the New York section in their stylish flannel shirts and denim overalls and raise holy hell as guests screamed and ran in terror.
7. A crowd favorite each year is the comedy/parody show located for many years in the Old West Stunt pavilion. Who are the hosts of this fan favorite?

Answer: Bill and Ted

Bill and Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure has been a favorite of many fans for years. Each year, the writers of the show do a fantastic job spoofing and parodying that year's pop culture and world events. Party on dudes!
8. Another fan favorite at Universal Studios was the annual parade which was a mixture of Mardi Gras type floats and horror themes. Guests caught coins and beads from scareactors on floats. What was the parade called?

Answer: Festival of the Dead

The Festival of the Dead parade ran through sections of streets of the park and featured scary themed floats and many horrific scareactrors and dancers each year. Guests lined the streets each night to try to catch special beads and coins, while others skip the parade all together to take advantage of short lines at the haunted mazes.
9. The year was 1998, and the logo for this year featured a ghoulish, fanged face pushing through some silky fabric. What was the event called in 1998?

Answer: Primal Scream

Primal Scream and its logo are a personal favorite of mine. The event that year featured five haunted mazes, a large scare zone called Midway to the Bizarre and five horror themed shows.
10. As sort of a traveling side show, a "live" woman in a glass coffin is wheeled through the streets at Horror Nights. A certain bunch of "critters" run over her as guest look on in amazement. What are the "critters" that she shared her coffin with?

Answer: Rats

Affectionatly named "The Rat Lady", she has become a staple element of Halloween Horror Nights over the years.
11. Another freak of sorts hired by Universal to stun and shock guests each year is this Florida native. Who is he?

Answer: The Lizard Man

With a snake-like forked tongue, implants in his forehead and tattoos from head to toe, Lizard Man shocks guests almost nightly as they wait in line for a haunted maze. Universal hires him as a diversion for guests who must suffer the long wait in line.

Some of his favorite tricks include putting a electric drill through his nose, spinning a chained chair from his pierced nose, nipples and back, swallowing swords and also swallowing snakes and letting them come back out through his nose. He has been on "Ripley's Believe It or Not" many times.
12. The year 1999 brought about the "Last Gasp". What major Universal film from that year inspired the creative team to develop the mascot?

Answer: The Mummy

The mascot for 1999 was indeed The Mummy. To capitalize on Universal's summer blockbuster, "Last Gasp" featured a haunted maze based on a cursed Egyptian tomb guest would have to navigate. "The Blair Witch Project" is an Artisan films property, "Lake Placid" is from 20th Century Fox and "Bone Collector" is indeed from Universal.
13. Jack The Clown brought his sick and twisted circus of horrors to Halloween Horror Nights in 2000. What was the whole slogan for that year?

Answer: "Not afraid of the dark? You don't know Jack!"

From Jack The Clown's twisted mind came such horrifying creations as "Anxiety", a 3D virtual reality-like maze where guests found themselves trapped inside a malfunctioning video game and the twisted acrobatic show, "Jacked Up" and the scare zone "Clown Attack". Hundreds of clowns filled the streets to menace the young, the old and everyone who got in their way. You were out of luck if you were afraid of clowns that year.
14. In 2001, Jack The Clown's younger and often upstaged brother was to become the new mascot in that year's event "I.C.U". Unfortunatly, he never saw the light of day after the events of September 11, 2001, shocked the world. What was his name supposed to be.

Answer: Eddie

Universal had to make some quick decisions and unfortunate revisions to the story line of 2001's I.C.U Horror Nights event. Eddie was supposed to be the younger brother of Jack the Clown and he held a major grudge against Jack. The story would have had the brothers using terrorist tactics against each other in an all out war of clown gangs in the streets of New York. Highly inappropriate to some, so Universal scrapped the idea with less than 3 weeks to go before the start of haunt season. All the blood was turned to ooze and Eddie never saw the light of day. Jack the Clown was once again the mascot that guests got to be scared by in 2001. Shame too, many fans consider I.C.U. a toned down event.
15. In a major twist to the event, Universal moved Halloween Horror Nights over to Islands of Adventure (thier 2nd park next door) in 2002. An evil caretaker was the mascot who haunted you in his abode in the classic haunted house Scream House. What was his name?

Answer: Albert Caine

Theming became an important element at "Islands of Fear" in 2002 with each separate Island becoming its own haunted world. Dr. Albert Caine
assured guests each night that "Your time has come..."
16. 2002's Islands of Fear used a popular TV show as the basis of one of the haunted mazes. What show was it?

Answer: Fear Factor

"Fear Factor" tried to get to core of a haunt, FEAR. It used the common fears of insects, the dark, dogs, and gore to good effect. Many thought that it was the weakest of all 2002's mazes.
17. Halloween Horror Nights 2003 remained at Islands of Adventure with a snuff film director taking the reins as mascot for the event's all important 13th year. What was the director's show called where he "auditioned" guests?

Answer: Infestation

Infestation was a show that guest's could either take part in or stand and watch. For a price of $5, anyone 18 years or older could let the director place a plexiglass case over their head, spin a wheel to choose which critter would be dumped on thier heads.

The wheel had roaches, rats, scorpions and mealworms on it. Often the director would purposly stop the wheel on the spot in which the "auditioning" guest had said they least wanted.
18. The director also had his own haunted maze called "All Night DrIvE In". (Notice the letters in capitals in the word "Drive" spell DIE) It contained many memorable scenes to classic horror films. Which one of these was NOT featured?

Answer: Hellraiser

Once you walked past the drive-in screen endlessly showing horror movie clips, you were in the director's domaine. Films came to life in front of your eyes. "Hellraiser" was not one of the director's featured horror films. The maze also contained scenes from "Friday the 13th". The sets were so convincing in this maze you felt like you walked on to a movie set.
19. The Suess Landing part of Islands of Adventure can not be used as a haunted part of Horror Nights.

Answer: true

The widow of Dr.Suess, Audrey Geisel will not allow Universal Studios to turn her husband's family friendly world into a place of scares and horror. Each year, Suess Landing remains devoid of any scareactors and only has a thick coating of fog, spooky lighting and some scary music to theme it.
20. Another of 2003's superb haunted mazes was PsychoScarapy. The patients of an insane asylum have taken over the hospital. What was the name of the hospital?

Answer: Shadybrook Rest Home

The Shadybrook Rest Home served as the backdrop to one of the best haunted mazes I have ever been in. Amazing acting and detailed sets put you amongst the crazies of PsychoScarapy. To round out this maze, the creative team at Universal actually pumped in the smell of excrement for the bathroom scene. A smell that anyone who experienced this maze won't soon forget.
