Spider-Man starred in all but 9 issues of "Marvel Team-Up" and it's annuals. Besides Spider-Man, which character held the starring role in the most issues?
Human Torch starred in 14 issues, 1,2,3,10,32,39,61,121, and 147 with Spider-Man, 18 with Hulk, 23 with Ice Man (and a Spider-Man cameo), 26 with Thor, 29 with Iron Man, and 35 with Dr Strange, as well as in issue 100 as part of the Fantastic Four. Hulk comes next with 10 starring roles. Iron Man has 8 and Dr Strange has 5. Daredevil, by the way, starred in 6 issues.

Answer: Frightful Four

Really, the Frightful Three this time, as only Wizard, Sandman, and Trapster appear. The great Fantastic Four villain Annihilus does escape from the Negative Zone for a short time, though. This is a classic by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru.

Fresh off of his first story in "Amazing Spider-Man 101 and 102", vampire Michael Morbius next met Spider-Man in these MTU issues by Gerry Conway with art by Ross Andru and Gil Kane. I'm not sure who came into the Marvel Universe first, Morbius or Dracula, but vampire comics were very popular in the 70's.

Answer: Kang the Conqueror

Kang (actually, a Kang robot) and Zarrko the Tomorrow Man battle the heroes and each other in these stories by Conway, Andru, and Jim Mooney.

Answer: Hulk

A scientist uses gamma radiation to revive Blastaar, and the radiation causes an annoying sensation in the Hulk's head, making him ready for battle with Blastaar, as told by Len Wein and Gil Kane.

Answer: Equinox the Thermodynamic Man

Boy, characters tended to have extended names back then! Ka-Zar and Black Panther helped Spidey fight Stegron in "MTU 19 & 20." The Torch and Iron Man met Infinitus in MTU 29 and Spidey and the Falcon pummeled Midas in "MTU 30."

Answer: Chameleon

Two of Marvel's greatest heroes against the lowly Chameleon, hardly seems like a fair fight. He fools the Hulk into thinking he was Rick Jones to bust his friend out of prison. Mysterio and Robot Master never appear in "MTU", but Meteor Man meets Spidey, Nighthawk, and Valkyrie in "MTU 33 & 34."

Answer: The Monster Maker

"MTU 36 and 37" had great covers by Ed Hannigan and John Romita Sr, but the story, by Gerry Conway, is pretty weak. Spidey meets the Frankenstein Monster and the Man-Wolf after being transported to Transylvania by the Monster Maker. Drake Shannon, the Orb, fights Spidey and Ghost Rider in "MTU 15." Spidey and the Beast meet Johnny Horton, the Griffin, in MTU 38, and the Basilisk; Basil Elks (great name, huh?) first fights Spider-Man, as well as Mr Fantastic and Captain Marvel in "MTU 16 & 17."

Answer: King Kull

This story, by Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema, was pretty cool. Scarlet Witch, Vision, Dr. Doom, and Moondragon help Spidey against historical figure Cotton Mather and the demon Dark Rider in "MTU 41-44." He helps Killraven's rebellion against the Martians in "MTU 45", and Deathlok in "MTU 46." He doesn't travel back in time, with Dr. Strange's help, to King Kull's era until "MTU 112."

Answer: Jean DeWolff

I think I asked a similar question in a previous Spider-Man quiz. (If you haven't played them yet, please do and let me know what you think.) Jean DeWolff was a great character best know for being killed by the Sin-Eater in "Spectacular Spider-Man" 107-110. Her brother, Brian DeWolff, was the villain, the Wraith. This is one of the best stories of the series, in my opinion, and is a preview of the great tales that Bill Mantlo will write and Sal Buscema will draw, separately, in future issues of "Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man".

Answer: The New X-Men

During 1974 and 75, Marvel published 6 "Giant Size Spider-Man"'s, which were like Team-Up Annuals. Giant Size 1 had Dracula, 2 had Shang Chi, and 4 had the Punisher. But the first "Marvel Team-Up Annual", by Chris Claremont, Bonnie Wilford, and Bill Mantlo featured a rather lame story about the recently introdued New X-Men (Colossus, Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Banshee) and the Gods of the Nest, based on Hindu deities.

Answer: Spider-Man, the Human Torch and the Sons of the Tiger vs the Big Man, the Crime Master, Sandman and the Enforcers

Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema created the tale of the Big Man's daughter and the Crime Master's son (what a coincidence that they'd fall in love, yet not realize that they were both trying to avenge their criminal fathers) in "MTU 39 and 40." "MTU #63 & 64" saw the Steel Serpent enter Spidey's life.

He met Captain Britain in "MTU #65 & 66." The Living Monolith made quite a splash in "MTU #69 & 70." Also deserving recognition by Claremont and Byrne are "MTU #59 & 60," with Yellow Jacket, the Wasp, and Equinox, "MTU #61 & 62," in which Spidey needs the Torch and Ms. Marvel to fight the Super Skrull and "MTU #67," in which Kraven forces Tigra to fight against Spidey.

Answer: Silver Samurai

Peter and Mary Jane attend a taping of "Saturday Night Live," hosted by Stan Lee, during which John Belushi accidentally receives a magical ring meant for the Silver Samurai (remember such skits as "Samurai Bakery"?) I really don't find the issue to be that funny, but it is like a time capsule back to 1978.

Answer: Power Man

By Claremont, Ralph Macchio, and John Byrne, this issue has been a favorite of mine since 1978. Also in 1978, Spider-Man and the Falcon saved Captain America from the Plant Man in "MTU #71," Iron Man saved Spider-Man from Whiplash and the Wraith in "MTU #72," and Spider-Man and Daredevil defeated the Owl in "MTU #73," all top notch comics.

Answer: Dr. Strange

He becomes possessed by this demon, which is controlling Silver Dagger, in "MTU 76 & 77." With the help of Satana, who dies in "MTU 81," Spider-Man is able to cure him. The spirit of Red Sonja possesses Mary Jane Watson in "MTU 79."

Answer: Black Widow

Black Widow has a type of amnesia and believes that she is schoolteacher Nancy Rushman. Peter feels that she is just the type of girl for him, and she also is attracted to him, until she returns to her Natasha Romanoff persona. Spidey does meet Nikki of the Guardians of the Galaxy in "MTU #86," and Hawkeye's girlfriend Mockingbird in "MTU #95," and Spider-Woman and the Hulk fight some robotic monsters in "MTU #97."

Answer: Killer Shrike

Killer Shrike went on to face Spidey in "Spectacular Spider-Man" #57 & 102, "Amazing Spider-Man" #310, "Web Of Spider-Man" #91, & "Spectacular Spider-Man Annual" #13.

By Allen Kupperberg, this satire isn't that great, but I tend to dislike issues that are created solely for laughs.

Answer: Karma

Karma is able to take over people's minds and forces Spidey and the FF to fight, much like the Purple Man in "MTU Annual #4." This issue is additionally significant because of the talent that worked on it: Claremont, Miller, and Byrne.

Answer: Nighthawk

Editor Denny O'Neil must have either been sleeping or really hard up for stories, because "MTU #101 and #102," written by Mike W. Barr and starring Doc Sampson, are virtually identical stories. DeMatteis, however, would soon begin to show his talent.

Answer: Frog Man

Eugene the Frog Man takes over for his dad, the villainous Leap Frog, and tries to be a hero. I like this issue because, like in "Amazing Spider-Man #222," Speed Demon is actually a tough villain, as opposed to the third tier bad guy he becomes whenever he's involved with the Sinister Syndicate.

Answer: The Serpent Crown

The demonic Set has his plans foiled by Spidey and the others in this story, sort of a follow up to "MTU #111 & 112."

Answer: Professor Power

Professor Power hated Charles Xavier because he felt Prof X caused his son's death in "MTU #117 & 118," and went after the X-Men, and Spidey, in "MTU #124," and "Spec #198 & 199." He also used Vermin in "MTU #128," a great comic with Captain America, "The Child Within" and "Death Of Vermin" stories in "Spectacular Spider-Man". Spidey and Dominic Fortune meet the ridiculous Turner D. Century in "MTU #120." The equally silly White Rabbit battles Spidey and Frog Man in "MTU #131."

Answer: Dr. Faustus

This issue picks up after Spidey and Mr. Fantastic's fight with Everyman in "MTU #132." Dr. Faustus creates a scenario designed to break Reed Richards' mind, but of course, it doesn't work.

Answer: Juggernaut and Black Tom Cassidy

I hope you didn't pick the White Dragon. That clown's not too tough, but he did fight Spidey and Moon Knight in "MTU #144."
