Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My first piece of jewelry is worn on the neck. It has a very tight fit and is often made of leather but could be made of nearly any material. What is its very fitting name?

Answer: Choker

A choker is a necklace variant that, unlike most neck jewelry, does not hang down towards the chest but rather tightly circles the neck itself. In its most pure form, the choker should exert some noticeable pressure on the neck, thus leading to the name.

A garotte, by the way, is worn in the same place but rather involuntarily - it is an instrument of torture and execution, not an item of jewelry.
2. Favored primarily by men and used to fasten the two sides of a cuff on a dress shirt or blouse instead of the usual button, this piece bears the word "cuff" in its name. What is it called?

Answer: Cufflink

A cufflink replaces the sleeve button on dress shirts and blouses. The sleeve has one button hole in the usual place and a second one where the button would normally be. The cufflink is then inserted through both holes, pressing the insides of the two layers of fabric together instead of having one go under the other.

It typically bears an ornamented plate on the upper side (the one readily visible when you place your arms on the table) and a clasping mechanism on the lower although there are also cufflinks with two decorative sides. Cufflinks almost invariably use a metal base but the top can be anything - expensive specimens even bear a large solitaire ruby, emerald or sapphire.
3. For the next piece, describing its shape and method of wearing it would be all too easy, but you could gain one if you win a major championship or graduate from school. This type of jewelry is also often exchanged shortly preceding a kiss. What is it?

Answer: A ring

Probably the most common form of jewelry in daily use, rings worn on the fingers date back to at least 4,000 BCE where the custom of giving rings as a token of appreciation has already been documented. The most commonly worn type of ring is of course the wedding ring, usually a relatively plain, unobtrusive, but valuable piece of jewelry. Rings are also commonly given to commemorate certain achievements such as graduations or sports championships; most of these are very large and bear intricate relief designs.
4. Let's try this the other way round: On which part of your body would you wear a chatelaine?

Answer: The waist

Chatelaines are a classic example of jewelry designed for utility. Worn as a belt hook or clasp, the first chatelaines had several chains from which often needed household items were suspended for easy access. Worn most often by the lady of the house, more affluent owners began to make chatelaines out of precious materials and, later on, to completely forgo the utility aspect, turning the item into a purely decorative one.
5. One of the oldest and most common types of jewelry is the brooch. Which of the following is a universal characteristic of this particular item?

Answer: It is worn fastened to a piece of clothing.

Brooches have been documented as far back as the Bronze Age. Usually made of metal or at least set on a metal base used for the fastener, brooches can be of any shape and have almost any decoration. Some brooches are used as fasteners, for example to hold together a cloak, but most are purely ornamental. Today, the term brooch is used only for valuable or artistic versions although, from the definition, lapel pins and promotional buttons would also fit the description.
6. A Japa mala is a religious piece of jewelry often worn by Hindus and Buddhists. It most closely resembles which Christian item?

Answer: Rosary beads

Japa mala are prayer bead chains usually consisting of 109 beads, used to aid the wearer in fully concentrating on a mantra for meditation instead of having to keep a count in his head. Out of these 109, one is called the sumeru or guru bead which is used to hold the Japa mala and as a marker for the start of the count of the remaining 108 beads strung on a loop. 108 is the basic number of repetitions for a mantra-based meditation although, like on the Christian rosary, the wearer can also go through several times. Common materials for Japa mala are wood, bone and some semi-precious stones such as amethyst and carnelian.
7. Jewelry is often not only decorative but also functional. One specific type of jewelry is favored by European aristocracy and, although today rarely used for its original function, it was used to ensure that the lord's commands could be certified as authentic even far from the castle. What is it?

Answer: A signet ring

Without a reliable mail service, the only way to ensure that a message arrived unaltered and was really from the person it claimed to be from was to apply a hot wax seal to the envelope. This seal bore the coat of arms of the sender as a relief. To create the seal, the lord pressed his signet ring - usually a gold ring with an inlaid gem bearing the image as intaglio - to the still soft wax.

The use of a ring ensured that the rightful owner always had the capability to seal messages right on hand and also made it very difficult to steal it.
8. Mostly worn in hip-hop culture, this next piece of jewelry fits over the wearer's front teeth. What is its name?

Answer: Grill

Grills began appearing in New York's hip hop culture around 1980, a trend often credited to Eddie Plein who custom-made these gold coverings for teeth for his customers. Early adopters include Big Daddy Kane and Kool G. Rap. Most grills are custom-fitted and can easily be removed, but there are also more permanent versions anchored to the teeth.

Their long-term safety is still under discussion.
9. Originally mostly confined to earrings in the western world, jewelry worn in a piercing in the skin is now available for almost every body part. Out of these options, which would be the least safe material for the skin-penetrating part of a piercing?

Answer: Silver

Silver, while a noble metal, is nowhere near as resistant to corrosion as gold, platinum and implant-grade titanium are. It is reasonably safe in normal situations when worn in a fully healed piercing, but if the piercing is new or has been torn, silver can oxidize and cause a lasting discoloration around the piercing. Additionally, silver is usually sterling grade - 925/1000 - and the remaining 7.5% usually include significant amounts of nickel, thus causing nickel allergies. If you wish to wear silver piercings, you should prefer items where the penetrating part is made of another material.
10. As the crowning piece of this quiz, let's finally put a crowning piece on your head. Which of these styles could you NOT choose from?

Answer: Bangle

Apart from the full, arched crown of royalty, the four basic variants of crowns are circlets, tiaras, diadems and coronets. The coronet is the typical crown of nobility below the monarch, consisting of a circlet with various ornaments. Unlike a full crown, it does not include arches supporting a central device. Circlets are plain or adorned bands of metal without protruding ornaments while diadems are characterized by the main band being open instead of joined behind the head, often with adornments added above or below the band.

A tiara, finally, is a high crown, worn completely above the forehead instead of partially covering it. A bangle, on the other hand, is a type of bracelet.
