Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is Lagoon located?

Answer: Farmington, Utah

Lagoon is located in Farmington, Utah which is 17 miles North of Salt Lake City and 17 miles South of Ogden.

If you happen to be visiting northern Utah why not plan to spend a day at Lagoon? Lagoon opens on the weekends each year at the beginning of April and closes at the end of October. During the summer months Lagoon is open all week long.
2. When did Lagoon open for the first time?

Answer: July 15, 1886

Lagoon first opened in 1886 under the name of Lake Park because it was built along the shores of the Great Salt Lake. It was moved to a nearby location 10 years later and was renamed Lagoon because it was built around the banks of a 9-acre lagoon.

And here is another fun fact for you, Utah was admitted to the union the same year that Lagoon was moved!
3. Lagoon's first thrill ride opened in 1899. What was its name?

Answer: Shoot-the-Chutes

"Shoot-the-Chutes" was the first thrill ride to open at Lagoon. The "Merry-Go-Round" was installed in 1906. Lagoon's first Roller Coaster opened in 1921; it was partially destroyed by a fire in 1953 but was rebuilt the following year. "Sky Ride" wasn't built until 1974.
4. In June 2007, Lagoon opened "Wicked". This roller coaster (manufactured by Zierer) is 2000 feet long and 110 feet high. How fast does "Wicked" run?

Answer: 55 miles per hour

At its fastest point "Wicked" can reach 55 miles per hour. In the first few seconds of the ride thrill seekers are launched 110 feet in the air at speeds close to 40 miles per hour!

This is one ride that you can't miss, but get there early because the line for this one takes awhile to get through!
5. Which of Lagoon's coasters was named by "People Magazine" in 1984 as one of the top 10 coaster rides in the country?

Answer: Colossus: The Fire Dragon

"Colossus" was installed in 1983 and the next year was named by "People Magazine" as one of the top 10 coaster rides in the country.

The double loops of "Colossus" have intimidated many, but don't let them scare you away from this ride; they are a coaster lover's dream!
6. Lagoon has a variety of water rides to keep you cool on a hot summer day. Which of Lagoon's water rides was designed to resemble a river rafting trip?

Answer: Rattlesnake Rapids

"Rattlesnake Rapids" takes you along a man made river channel that is one third of a mile long. It takes 5 to 6 minutes to make your way along the waterway in a circular yellow raft. Each raft can hold you and up to 8 of your friends, but you'll be much more comfortable with a max of 6 riders. Along the way you will go through a tunnel, under a waterfall, and through a section of bumpers which always reminds of an old fashioned pinball machine.

If you visit Lagoon you won't want to miss this ride. It is located in Pioneer Village and it is a fine way to cool off on a hot summer day!
7. Lagoon strives to keep patrons of all ages happy. They have a number of children's rides in Kiddieland which are smaller versions of other rides in the park. Which pairing of rides does NOT match?

Answer: "Kontiki" and "Samurai"

"Kontiki" is actually a kid's version of "Tidal Wave" not "Samurai".

Some of the kid's versions of the rides are even better than the adult versions. For instance "Ladybug Bop", "Dinosaur Drop", and "Kontiki" all rotate in a circular pattern in addition to the motion of the adult rides. And the best part is that adults are welcome on many of these rides as long as you are accompanied by a child!
8. Lagoon has always been known for its entertainment. In the 30's and 40's its dancing pavilion was the host of many of the big bands of the day. During the 50's and 60's Lagoon was a concert hot spot in the state of Utah. In 1982 Lagoon continued its entertainment legacy when it opened Music USA. What type of entertainment will you see at Music USA?

Answer: Both Singing and Dancing

Each year Lagoon presents a brand new singing and dancing show on the Music USA stage.

Don't miss the show at Music USA when you visit Lagoon, it is always superb!
9. Pioneer Village was opened at Lagoon in 1976. Which of the following CANNOT be done in Pioneer Village?

Answer: Meet real pioneers.

OK, so that was an easy one. Of course you can't meet real pioneers in pioneer village since they all died many years ago. But don't let that stop you from checking out this mock town when you visit Lagoon because it is full of interesting things to look at and fun things to do. You will find both the "Log Flume" and "Rattlesnake Rapids" in Pioneer Village. And if you get tired of going on rides, you can take the time to stroll through an old rock chapel, several pioneer homes, or even visit the carriage museum.
10. Lagoon transforms every October for a scary good time. Tombstones suddenly overtake the grassy areas, monsters freely roam the midway, and spook allies arise from the terraces for the pleasure of the not so fainthearted. What is the name of this annual Lagoon experience?

Answer: Frightmares

Frightmares, of course!

If you are only going to visit Lagoon once a year I would suggest going in October so that you can experience the fun of Frightmares! Just be sure that you check the weather first!
