1. What was Charles M. Schulz' nickname?

Answer: Sparky

He was nicknamed for the horse "Sparkplug" from the comic strip "Barney Google".
2. What occupation did Schulz's father work in?

Answer: Barber

Charlie Brown's father was also a barber and, like Charlie Brown, Schulz also loved to hang around his dad's barbershop.
3. What was Schulz's childhood dog's name?

Answer: Spike

Interestingly enough, Spike was a pointer, not a beagle. He wanted to name the dog Spot but, thankfully, his older siblings vetoed him.
4. What was the name of the comic strip Schulz drew while in the Army?

Answer: "As We Were"

Schulz was drafted in 1943, and was eventually shipped out to Germany while Dauchau was being liberated.
5. What school did Schulz graduate from and eventually teach at?

Answer: Art Instruction Inc.

Schulz took a teaching job at Art Instruction Inc., after returning from the war in 1945.
6. What was the original title of the "Peanuts" strip?

Answer: "Li'l Folks"

After being accepted by United Feature Syndicate Schulz wanted to call the strip "Good Ol' Charlie Brown," but the syndicate didn't want the focus on one character, thus "Peanuts" was born on October 2, 1950.
7. Who gave Schroeder his first toy piano?

Answer: Charlie Brown

From the first, Schroeder played like a virtuoso on his toy piano. When Charlie Brown tried to have him play on a "real" piano he bawled until he got his toy back.
8. Who was holding the football the first time Charlie Brown tried to kick it and missed?

Answer: Violet

Unlike Lucy, Violet was not motivated by malice. She was just scared that Charlie Brown would kick her by mistake and shied away at the last moment.
9. Lucy is older than Charlie Brown.

Answer: False

Charlie Brown frequently baby-sat Lucy in the early strips and was at times a mentor for her while growing up.
10. What culinary concoctions was Violet fixated with in the early strips?

Answer: Mud Pies

Violet was always looking for the perfect mud pie recipe and Charlie Brown was one of her regular customers.
11. What year did Linus join the "Peanuts" gang?

Answer: 1952

Linus was the first character to be "born" in the strip. Linus and his security blanket would be one of Schulz's favorite characters to draw because he would use Linus to inject the naive things into the strip he would frequently come up with.
12. Which of these words have we actually heard Snoopy SPEAK in the strip?

Answer: Boo!

In a Sunday Halloween strip from 1953, Snoopy, along with two other costumed characters, try to scare Lucy who turns the table at the end of the strip.
13. What was Lucy's "pet" name given to her by her mother?

Answer: Fussbudget

A Rare Gem is what Peppermint Patty's dad calls her, Linus is Sally's Sweet Baboo and, of course, Charlie Brown is the original Blockhead.
14. Where did Schulz meet Donna Johnson, his real-life Little Red-Haired Girl?

Answer: Art Instruction Inc.

Schulz met Donna in 1947, and had a long romance with her but when he asked her to marry him she declined and married fireman Allan Wold instead. They remained friends and the Little Red-Haired Girl became a staple in the "Peanuts" world.
15. What was Schulz's favorite novel?

Answer: "War and Peace"

Although Schulz enjoyed books by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Joan Didion, he cited Tolstoy's "War and Peace" as his favorite and the "Peanuts" characters read and discussed it in dozens of strips. All information was taken from "The Art of Charles M. Schulz" edited by Chip Kidd and Jean Schulz.
