Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Does the Roller Soaker roller coaster have water associated with this ride?

Answer: yes

The Roller Soaker opened in Hersheypark in 2002. It is a roller coaster were passengers can dump water on the heads of riders waiting in line. At the same time, riders in line for the ride can soak the passengers on the ride with water cannons. Hence the name The Roller Soaker.
2. Which of the following roller coasters is the oldest?

Answer: The Raven

The Raven opened up at Holiday World in 1995. It is a wooden coaster with a track length of 2800 feet, a top speed of 60 MPH, and a lift height of 110 feet. Invertigo opened up at Paramount's Great America in 1998. Medusa opened up at Six Flags Great Adventure in 1999. Ghost Rider opened up at Knott's Berry Farm in 1998.
3. Three of the following four coasters can be located at my favorite amusement park, Cedar Point. Which of these coasters is NOT located there?

Answer: The Comet

The Comet is one a few select coasters in the world that is considered a "Classic Coaster", meaning little or no changes have taken place to the coaster throughout its lifetime. The Comet originally opened in 1948 at Crystal Beach. The Comet has a track length of 4197 feet, a top speed of 55 MPH, and a lift height of 95 feet. In 1994, The Comet was moved to Great Escape Fun Park.
4. Standing roller coasters are coasters where the rider actually is standing throughout the entire ride. Of the following four choices, which coaster is a standing coaster?

Answer: Chang

Chang opened in 1997 at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom. It has a track length of 4155 feet, a top speed of 63 MPH, and has a lift height of 154 feet. As an added bonus, the ride also has 5 inversions. It cost $12 million to build this ride.
5. My favorite type of roller coasters are inverted coasters. These are roller coasters that hang below the track, where all you can see when you look down is your feet dangling, and the ground below. Which coaster of the following is an inverted coaster?

Answer: Raptor

One of my all-time favorite coasters, the Raptor is one wild ride. It was one of the first inverted coasters created in the world. It opened up at Cedar Point in 1994 to the tune of 11.5 million dollars. It has a track length of 3790 feet, a top speed of 57 MPH, and a lift height of 137 feet.

The Raptor has six inversions, which are a vertical loop, two inverted corkscrews, a zero-gravity roll, and a cobra roll, which turns riders upside down two times.
6. The Magnum XL 200 was the first "hyper coaster" built in the world.

Answer: True

The Magnum XL 200 was unleashed at Cedar Point in 1989, the very year I first rode this ride. It cost $8 million to build this monster. It consists of a track length of 5106 feet (almost a mile long), a top speed of 72 MPH, and a lift height of 205 feet. "I was merely 11 years old. I was never more scared in my life.

It was like a free fall". These were the feelings I had as I got off of the Magnum XL 200 for the very first time.
7. The Beast. Son of Beast. The Vortex. All three of these coasters have one thing in common, and that is they are located at the same amusement park. Which of the following parks is the home to these three coaster giants?

Answer: Paramount's Kings Island

All three of these coasters are located at Paramount's Kings Island. The Beast opened in 1979, The Vortex opened in 1987, and Son of Beast opened in 2000.
8. The Titan is located in Six Flags St Louis.

Answer: False

The Titan can be found at Six Flags over Texas. It is a "mega coaster", with a track length of 5312 feet, a top speed of 85 MPH, and a lift height of 245 feet. Titan opened in 2001. Titan actually has a vertical drop of 255 feet, because it drops straight into a 10 foot vertical shaft in the ground, making the drop greater than the height.
9. There are also many great coasters located outside of the United States. Which of the following coasters can be found outside of the United States?

Answer: Megafobia

Megafobia is a twisted wooden coaster located at Oakwood Park in Narberth, Wales. It opened in 1996, has a track length of 3200 feet, a top speed of 50 MPH, and has a lift height of 87 feet. The stats don't sound impressive, but the ride twists and turns within itself, like a pretzel, which plays with the rider's sense of perception.
10. Which of the following coasters opened in 2001?

Answer: Talon

Talon opened at Dorney Park in 2001. It is an inverted coaster with a track length of 3110 feet, a top speed of 58 MPH, and a lift height of 135 feet. Talon has four inversions, including a 98 foot vertical loop. Lightning Racer opened at Hersheypark in 2000. Gwazi opened at Busch Gardens Tampa in 1999. The Villain opened at Six Flags Ohio in 2000.
