Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We start with some classical magic: 'The Linking Rings' has been performed for years and years. If there is a gimmick involved do you know what it's called?

Answer: The key ring

There is a gimmick of course. It's called 'the key ring' because that ring holds the secret to the entire trick and is hence the key of the mystery.
2. Another very old trick involves moves like galloping, transportations, vanishes and reappearances. Quite often a few transformations are also thrown in as a climax. What's the name of this trick?

Answer: Cups and Balls.

'Cups and Balls' are a real classic in magic. In fact it is widely regarded as the oldest tricks of all since it has been traced way back to the ancient Egypt.
3. If you do an 'Elmsley count', exactly what are you doing?

Answer: Counting four cards as four cards, hiding the third card.

Counting four as four while hiding the bottom card is known as a 'Jordan count' and is very similar to the Elmsley. Both methods have later been developed further in order to be able to use more than four cards while the audience believe it to be just four.
4. Many magicians use a 'servant', but what is it?

Answer: A secret pocket or a box hidden behind the table.

5. Very often a magician makes you look at one hand while he/ she makes a secret move with the other hand. What is the correct term for this?

Answer: Misdirection.

Some times the entire effect is based on nothing else than misdirection. The classic pick-pocket routines is a great example of that where the magician distracts the 'victim' in every possible way while stealing everything he/ she can.
6. Some times a magician will use a cup that is gimmicked so that certain things stick to the inside. What is the name of such a cup?

Answer: Chop cup.

7. If someone invites you to participate in a game of 'Three Card Monte', what is a sure way of winning?

Answer: There are no ways of winning.

It's true! You can never win a game of 'Three Card Monte'. Even if you should pick the right card the con-man has a variety of sleights he can use to switch that card while pretending to turn it over.
8. When will a magician use a 'double undercut'?

Answer: When secretly moving one or several cards from the top of the deck to the bottom.

The double undercut is actually equally suited to move a card from the bottom to the top.
9. In a famous illusion the magician's assistant is shackled, put in a bag and locked inside a box. The magician stands on top of the box and rises a curtain. Then in the blink of an eye the magician and assistant have changed places. Can you name this illusion?

Answer: Metamorphosis.

10. 'Twisting The Aces' is a neat little cardtrick, but who invented it?

Answer: Dai Vernon.

Dai Vernon was one of the first magicians to fully appreciate the possibilities of the Elmsley count after it was published in 1959. 'Twisting the Aces' is based solely on this false count.
