Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tarzan first appeared in a 1912 novel, "Tarzan of the Apes". Who wrote this novel?

Answer: Edgar Rice Burroughs

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) wrote almost two dozen novels about Tarzan/John Clayton. He was also the creator of the "John Carter of Mars" series. The novel was first published in 1912 in "All-Story Magazine" and republished in 1914 in book form.
2. The first big-screen outing for Tarzan was "Tarzan of the Apes" (1918). Who starred in this film as Tarzan?

Answer: Elmo Lincoln

Elmo Lincoln (1889-1952) appeared in a total of three movies as Tarzan: "Tarzan of the Apes", "The Romance of Tarzan" (1918), and a 1921 serial "The Adventures of Tarzan". "Tarzan of the Apes" is a fairly faithful adaption of the first part of Burroughs book. "The Romance of Tarzan" adapts the second part of the book but transplants it to a Wild West setting. Enid Markey co-stars as Jane Porter.
3. With "Tarzan the Ape Man" (1932) an actor began a 12-picture association with the Tarzan role. Who was this actor?

Answer: Johnny Weissmuller

Johnny Weissmuller (1900-1984) was a five-time Olympic gold medalist for the United States in swimming in the 1924 Summer Olympics (Paris) and 1928 Summer Olympics (Amsterdam). Weissmuller would make Tarzan movies until 1948. "Tarzan the Ape Man" co-starred Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane. This movie helped to create the public perception of "Me Tarzan, You Jane".
4. The 1933 movie "Tarzan the Fearless" starred Buster Crabbe. With which iconic movie role is Crabbe also identified?

Answer: Flash Gordon

Buster Crabbe (1908-1983) was a Olympic gold medalist in swimming for the United States, like Johnny Weissmuller. He appeared as Flash Gordon in three movie serials in the 1930s and 1940s as well as the 1939 movie serial "Buck Rogers". One of his last appearances was as a fighter pilot in the television series "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" (1979-1981).
5. Many Tarzan movies and serials were filmed on Hollywood back lots. The serial "The New Adventures of Tarzan" (1935) was notable in that significant portions were filmed on location. Where was this serial set?

Answer: Guatemala

The serial starred Herman Brix (1906-2007)--that's not a typo, he really lived to be 100. He was a silver medalist for the United States in the 1928 Summer Olympics. Set in Guatemala, many scenes of "The New Adventures of Tarzan" were actually filmed in Guatemala. The series ran for 12 chapters.
6. In 1932, Tarzan made the jump to radio in a series entitled "Tarzan". In this series, who starred as Tarzan?

Answer: James H. Pierce

James H. Pierce (1900-1983) starred in the radio serial along with his real-life wife, Joan Burroughs, daughter of Edgar Rice Burroughs. The series initially ran on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in 10-minute episodes. Later episodes in 1935 and 1936 were daily episodes. Pierce had also appeared in a 1927 silent film "Tarzan and the Golden Lion".
7. Tarzan made his first weekly appearance on the small screen in 1966 in "Tarzan". Who played this version of Tarzan?

Answer: Ron Ely

"Tarzan" had 57 episodes over two seasons. Ron Ely (b. 1938) has also hosted the game show "Face the Music". The show was in color and featured Cheetah but no Jane.
8. In 1976-1977 the animation company, Filmation, presented "Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle". Who provided the voice of Tarzan?

Answer: Robert Ridgely

Robert Ridgely (1931-1997) portrayed Tarzan in sixteen first season episodes and six second season episodes. "Tarzan" episodes appeared in later seasons as part of "The Batman/Tarzan Adventure Hour" and "Tarzan and the Super 7". The portrayal of Tarzan hearkens back to the character of the Burroughs novels.
9. Tarzan made another appearance on the small screen in "Tarzan: The Epic Adventures". Who portrayed Tarzan in this version?

Answer: Joe Lara

"Tarzan: The Epic Adventures" lasted for one season and twenty-two episodes. Joe Lara (b. 1962) starred in the title role. This version had a fantasy emphasis and some of the flavor of "Hercules: The Legendary Journey".
10. Tarzan even has an American community named after him, Tarzana. In which state could you find Tarzana and the burial place of Tarzan's creator?

Answer: California

In 1915 or 1919 (sources vary) Edgar Rice Burroughs purchased a ranch in what is now Los Angeles. The residential community that developed around the ranch called itself Tarzana. Tarzana covers an area of 8.79 square miles and has 37,778 people (2008 estimate). The stamp shows Richard Nixon, 37th president of the United States and a native of California.
