Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which would be the winning hand?

Answer: KC, AC, KH, KD, AS

A full house beats a straight and a pair. An ace high doesn't beat much. For a complete list of poker hand rankings, a good website to view is www.poker.about.com . On this site they include visuals to aid understanding.
2. If the community cards are 2C, 5D, KS, 8C and AC who would win the hand?

Answer: QC, 7C

Although each of these are a decent hand, the flush beats a straight, three of a kind, and two pair.
3. Which hand would win the pot, if the community cards are KS, 10D, JS, JC, and 9H?

Answer: AH, QD

An ace high straight beats a king high straight, two pairs, and one pair.
4. The community cards are AD, 3S, 6C, AH, and 10S. Who would win the hand?

Answer: 10C, 10D

Three tens and two aces would give this player a full house.
5. Your opponent has QS and 9C. You have AD and 2C. The community cards are QH, 2D, and 7C. How many outs do you have?

Answer: 5

You could win by having the turn and/or river show another two (either 2H or 2S) You would then have three of a kind. You could also win by getting one of the three possible aces (AC, AS, or AH). Your pair would then be higher than your opponents.
6. What starting hand is sometimes called "big slick"?

Answer: AK

Pocket aces are known as pocket rockets or bullets. Pocket jacks are referred to as fish hooks. Two four's are sometimes called sailboats, because the shape of the four resembles a sail. Many of these names I learned by watching the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel.

The commentators frequently use slang to describe the hands. At www.playwinningpoker.com they have quite an extensive list of starting hands and their nicknames.
7. Your pocket cards are KH and 9S. This starting hand is sometimes referred to as what?

Answer: Canine

This nickname comes from the sound you hear when saying the 'K' in king and '9'.
8. At a full table what is considered to be the worst starting hand in poker?

Answer: 2C, 7H

2,7 offsuit is considered to be the worst starting hand because the numbers are too far apart to make a straight. The fact that they are offsuit also reduces your odds of making a flush.
9. Your opponent has KD, QH. You have AC, 2S. The community cards are 2C, QD, 8C, AS, and KS. Who wins?

Answer: You do

Although you both have two pair, your aces and twos beat your opponents kings and queens.
10. Your opponent has 4C, AD. You have AS, 2H. The community cards are AH, KC, 5S, 9H, and 7S. Who wins the hand?

Answer: It is a tie- you split the pot

Both players have a pair of aces. The next three highest cards both players would play are KC, 9H, and 7S. Also, a pot never carries over to the next hand.
