Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the poem about using one's imagination when one is sick in bed?

Answer: The Land of Counterpane

The last verse goes:
"I was the giant great and still
That sits upon the pillow-hill,
And sees before him, dale and plain,
The pleasant land of counterpane."

"My Bed is a Boat" and "The Land of Nod" are also poems by Stevenson, but they are about bedtime, sleeping and dreaming.
2. Fill in the blank: "In winter I get up at night And dress by __________ candlelight. In summer, quite the other way, I have to go to bed by day."

Answer: yellow

This is the first verse of the poem "Bed in Summer". The child is annoyed about having to go to bed while it is still sunny out. No doubt this poem struck a chord with many young readers!
3. What is the last line? "A child should always say what's true and speak when he is spoken to, And behave mannerly at table; _______________________________

Answer: At least as far as he is able.

This is the poem called "Whole Duty of Children" in its entirety. Short and sweet!
4. Fill in the blank: "I have a little _________ that goes in and out with me, And what can be the use of him is more than I can see. He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head; And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed."

Answer: shadow

This is the beginning of the poem "My Shadow". I really liked this one as a child.
5. In "The Hayloft", there are four imaginary mountaintops: Mount Clear, Mount Rusty-Nail, Mount Eagle and _________ .

Answer: Mount High

The verse goes:

"Here is Mount Clear, Mount Rusty-Nail,
Mount Eagle and Mount High; --
The mice that in these mountains dwell,
No happier than I!"
6. Fill in the blank: "How do you like to go up on a swing, Up in the air so blue? Oh, I do think it the ___________ thing Ever a child can do!"

Answer: pleasantest

From "The Swing". This was one of my favorites!
7. What is the name of this poem? "The world is full of a number of things, I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings."

Answer: Happy Thought

This is another very short poem!
8. What's the missing phrase? "Late lies the wintry sun abed, A frosty, fiery sleepyhead; Blinks but an hour or two; and then, ___________________________"

Answer: A blood-red orange, sets again.

From "Wintertime". The first time I ever saw a real blood orange (as a young adult), this was the first thing that popped into my head.
9. In the poem "Singing", what does the bird sing about?

Answer: speckled eggs and nests among the trees

"Of speckled eggs the birdie sings
And nests among the trees;
The sailor sings of ropes and things
In ships upon the seas."
10. In the poem "Foreign Lands", what type of tree does the child climb?

Answer: cherry

"Up into the cherry tree
Who should climb but little me?
I held the trunk with both my hands
And looked abroad on foreign lands."
