Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He has terrible
Answer: tusks
Tusks are long pointed teeth which some animals have. Tusks are different from our teeth because they never stop growing. Elephants, warthogs and walruses all have tusks. Elephants use their tusks to dig with, and walruses use theirs to grip on ice.
2. And terrible
Answer: claws
Claws are similar our fingernails but are curved and pointy. Many animals have claws including cats and dogs. Claws are more than just a weapon, they can also help animals to climb and dig.
3. And terrible teeth in his terrible
Answer: jaws
The jawbones are the bones which form the mouth and which hold the teeth. By the age of three years, most human babies have 20 "milk teeth". These start to fall out at 5 or 6 years old and are replaced by adult teeth. A full set of adult teeth contains 23 teeth. Some species of dolphin have over 250 teeth!
4. He has knobbly
Answer: knees
It is thought that everyone has different patterns of knobbles on their knees, which could be as individual as fingerprints. It's possible that in the future we will get our kneecaps scanned at airport security gates. In the 1950s, British holiday camps used to hold knobbly knees competitions.
The contestants would roll up their trouser legs and the person judged to have the knobbliest knees was the winner.
5. And turned-out
Answer: toes
In 2000, explorers found a 3000 year old toe in Egypt. It had been made for somebody who had lost their big toe. In fact people can manage quite well with a missing toe. Surgeons sometimes remove a big toe from a person's foot and stitch it onto their hand to replace a missing thumb. It's much more difficult to live without a thumb.
6. And a poisonous
Answer: wart
A wart is a small area of hard skin with a bumpy surface. Warts are normally harmless and disappear without any treatment eventually. There used to be all sorts of superstitions about warts. People thought that warts came from touching frogs or toads.
It was thought that rubbing a cut potato on a wart and then burying it under a full moon would cure the wart. Nowadays people often try to get rid of warts by covering them with duct tape.
7. At the end of his
Answer: nose
One of my favourite jokes goes like this: "My dog's got no nose." "Really? How does he smell?" "Terrible!". Our noses do more than just smell though. They also clean the air we breathe in by catching dirt and germs before they can get further into our bodies. Your nose produces about 1 litre of mucus (otherwise known as snot) every day!
8. His eyes are
Answer: orange
There are many animals who have orange eyes, including some owls, lemurs, frogs, cats and dogs. Scientists have discovered that the colour of an owl's eyes can tell us about when that sort of owl likes to hunt. The types of owl who have orange eyes tend to hunt at dawn and dusk, while owls with darker eyes tend to hunt during darkness.
The dark colour of their eyes doesn't help them see in the dark, but it might make them harder to see. Owls with yellow eyes tend to hunt in the daytime.
9. His tongue is
Answer: black
The human tongue has on average 3000-10,000 taste buds. In most countries, sticking out your tongue is considered rude, but in Tibet it is a common greeting. Animals which have black tongues include the giraffe, the polar bear and some sorts of cow.
10. He has purple prickles all over his
Answer: back
Hedgehogs, porcupines and echidnas all have prickles or "spines" all over their backs. These are an excellent way of protecting themselves from other animals who want to eat them. Some types of fish are prickly as well. You might remember the character Bloat from the film "Finding Nemo". He was a porcupine pufferfish.
