"Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators" Quiz

Always when I don't have anything to read, I re-read the books I loved when I was younger. So when I got to the "Three Investigators" last week, I thought I might as well do a quiz about it. So here it is...

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tell me the LAST names of the Three Investigators.

Answer: Jones, Crenshaw, Andrews

I read the German version where the names of the Three are Justus Jonas, Peter Shaw, and Bob Andrews. But I was told that they are called by different names in the US version, so I'll try to stick to the names you are familiar with (though it's mighty strange for me!): Jupiter Jones - the ex-star who always tries to compensate his overweight by excellent brain-work. Pete Crenshaw - the sportsman who always tries in vain to step back from dangerous actions (but he isn't a coward!). And Bob Andrews - in the earlier novels the glasses-wearing bookworm, later the good-looking ladykiller.
2. Who created the characters?

Answer: Robert Arthur

Though it's a little confusing... At first I thought that Alfred Hitchcock wrote the books himself. But it is said in the beginning of every novel - "Text by (whoever), based on characters created by Robert Arthur".
3. Jupiter's Uncle Titus has a middle name.

Answer: True

Titus Andronicus Jones. Sometimes, Aunt Mathilda calls him by all his names; that means that she's really being serious or upset.
4. What is the name of the chauffeur who used to drive the Rolls-Royce in the earlier novels?

Answer: Worthington

He is very formal and British, but he has a sense for adventure as well. He helped the boys a lot - too bad that he doesn't appear in the later novels. In my (German) version, his name is Morton, and I don't know why. But they've changed the ???'s names, too, as I mentioned in the info section for question 1. Strange...
5. Who of the Three Investigators has made the greatest change throughout the series?

Answer: Bob

From the bookworm to the Don Juan. I never liked that; I loved the old novels much better - with the Rolls-Royce, Bob working in the library, Jupiter not thinking about losing weight, and Alfred Hitchcock giving hints during the story.
6. Which case of the Three Investigators involves the following characters: Steve Tresh, Axel Griswold, Rainey Fields?

Answer: "Funny Business"

A story about theft at a comic fair. Despite the fact I like the old ones better, this book is the exception to the rule - one of my favorites. Maybe because it was the first one I ever read :)
7. What was the name of Jupiter's doppelganger in "The Mystery of the Deadly Double"?

Answer: Ian Carew

Jupiter was mistaken for Ian and kidnapped in the beginning of the novel. The others are characters from "The Silver Spider" (Lars Holmqvist), "The Fiery Eye" (August "Gus" August), and "The Green Ghost" (Charles "Chang" Green).
8. What does "El Tiburón" ("Hot Wheels") mean?

Answer: Shark

El Tiburón is the lead singer of the band "El Tiburón and the Piranhas". He involves Jupiter's cousin Ty in a case of car theft.
9. Do you remember the name of Allie Jamison's horse in "The Mystery of the Singing Serpent"?

Answer: "Indian Queen"

Allie calls her "Queenie".
10. A very easy one to end with: What is the symbol of the Three Investigators?

Answer: ???

Jupiter loves to explain why that is.
Another word on the German version: Not only did they change the names of the ??? and the chauffeur - I just learned that the twins who used to help in the salvage yard are actually Bavarian in the original version. Then why the heck did the German translator make them Irish? I got to know them as Patrick and Kenneth... If you're interested in such translation problems, then take my quiz "Names Lost in Translation" to find out :)
Thanks for playing.
