Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first stop is Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls lies on the Zambezi River and flows through countries like Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Zambezi River is the fourth longest river on which continent?

Answer: Africa

Tazman66129 says the Zambezi River is the fourth longest river in Africa. Victoria Falls is located on the Zambezi River between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe. Scottish missionary David Livingstone is believed to be the first European to see the falls. He named the falls after the British monarch at the time, Queen Victoria.
2. Bonjour! Next we jet off to a country famed for its baguettes, Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe and where we find the Notre Dame de Paris. Which country is this?

Answer: France

Malik24 tells us the Notre Dame de Paris actually translates into 'Our Lady of Paris' - it is a beautiful building. Maybe you have heard of the Disney film 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'? Indeed, this was the castle used for the basis of that film! The castle has also been known for its five bells. They used to be used until people worried about the vibrations shaking down the building - they are really huge! But, at least we can still view this magnificent castle because of it.
3. How about a stop at some ancient Roman ruins? The Amphitheatre of Thysdrus is like the old version of a theatre for Romans, and people watched gladiators fight animals for fun. Which of these animals might they have fought? (Hint: Simba would be sad!)

Answer: Lion

Malik24 informs us the Amphitheatre of Thysdrus was built in Tunisia, in Africa. The gladiators were fierce warriors who had to fight or else they would die; very few chose to become a gladiator. The Amphitheatre was built around 230 AD - that's a long time ago! - and could seat 30,000 people. Sadly, people watched these gladiators fight lions and other gladiators for fun; things weren't all that nice back then.
4. Luke Skywalker from the "Star Wars" movies was raised on a planet named after which of these places that is our next destination?

Answer: Tataouine

Pollucci19 says Luke Skywalker's home planet is Tatooine whose spelling is very similar to Tataouine. Tataouine is in Tunisia which is in the north of Africa. It is very famous for its cave dwellings. In 1931 a meteorite fell in the area and provided scientists with some very valuable minerals.
5. At our next stop we hear Vroom! Vroom! A lot of fast cars come from Modena, on the Po River. Which of these countries should you visit to see the place where Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Maseratis are born?

Answer: Italy

CellarDoor states that they call Modena "the capital of engines" because of all the high-powered sports cars made here. A lot of the manufacturers have headquarters here, too! Modena is in northern Italy in a region called Emilia-Romagna.
6. Our next stop is the place where the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built a mighty fort for himself in India that he named after the colour of blood. What colour would that be?

Answer: Red

Pollucci19 says the Emperor started building the fort in 1638 in Old Delhi. The Fort became the capital of his people, the Mughals, until 1857 when they were defeated by the British. Today it is considered to be a World Heritage Site which means that it is valuable reminder of the past and needs to be preserved.
7. Off we go to Asia. Bangkok is the capital of which country in Asia?

Answer: Thailand

Tazman6619 informs us that Bangkok is the capital and largest city in Thailand. Its Thai name means 'City of Angels'. It started as a small trading post in the 15th century and grew to become what it is today.
8. The Temple of Heavenly Park is our next stop and is in a city called Beijing. In which country would you find Beijing?

Answer: China

Pollucci19 states that Beijing is the capital city of China and it has more than 19 million people in it. In 2008 the Olympic Games were held there.
9. Our next destination is the Matanuska Glacier. The glacier has a lot of ice and is found in which of these very cold places?

Answer: Alaska

Pollucci19 says Alaska is easily the coldest of all these places and definitely the best suited to keep a glacier from melting away very quickly. Alaska is a part of the United States of America.
10. Our final stop is to see the Unisphere in New York City. New York City has a nickname that should remind you of a piece of fruit you might give your teacher. What is New York City's nickname?

Answer: The Big Apple

Tazman6619 tells us the Unisphere is a twelve story high, stainless steel globe that looks like the Earth and is located in New York City. The Unisphere was commissioned for the New York World Fair in 1964/65 and is dedicated to "Man's Achievement on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe". New York City's nickname 'The Big Apple' was first popularized by John J. Fitz Gerald in the 1920s. Mr. Fitz Gerald was a sports writer for the "New York Morning Telegraph".
