Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When I landed, the fiery explosion burned almost everything. A creature, however, wasn't even scathed. Apparently, he is immune to fire. Who is it?

Answer: Salamander

I don't know if you guys recognised him, but he was a salamander, a mythical creature with fire immunity. Real salamanders belong to the amphibian family and are completely voiceless. Should I say "real salamanders", or "salamanders of our world"? The one I saw there looked real enough to me.
2. While I was wandering, I stumbled upon another spectacle. A majestic bird burst into flames before my eyes! But you need not be concerned for her, as she was reborn from the ashes. Who is this immortal avian?

Answer: A phoenix

It did not take me more than a second to recognize the majestic bird as a phoenix. I have read about them loads of times, and phoenix legends can be found throughout history. Some say their tears have healing capabilities, though every mythology depicts them as immortal birds who die and are reborn from the ashes.

It was amazing to see it soar towards the sun. Pity that I did not meet a faun during my travels.
3. I sat down on what looked like an extremely large piece of bluish green rock. I was proved wrong soon enough when the rocky looking lizard moved, looked at me angrily and breathed out fire. What type of creature was it?

Answer: Dragon

That is a dragon! My mind shrieked to me as I scampered out of the flame's way. I think the dragon was either Indonesian, Swedish or Chinese; it sure did not look to me like the friendly ones about whom I had read in Norwegian or Indian mythology (in those tales, they either gift you with money or protect you). Still, it was not a timingil, which used to swallow whales. Lucky me!
4. I barely made out of there alive when I met a huge snake. I was really thankful that I did not look directly in its eye, as any creature doing so would die instantly. Which type of snake was it?

Answer: Basilisk

My blood ran cold as I looked at the basilisk. I knew looking in its eyes directly would kill me, and moreover he had huge, poisonous fangs! Why could I simply have not met eirabat instead, the ride of Indra (king of Gods in Indian mythology)?
5. I was saved by the arrival of a huge bird which was like 500 eagles mixed together. I recognised him as the same bird that Sinbad met during his travels. Can you name him?

Answer: Roc/Rukh bird

Man, was I glad to see the bird. Having read the adventures of Sinbad the sailor, I recognised him as the same bird that caused one of Sinbad's shipwrecks. He is called both Roc and Rukh. However, the bird's story was not the most famous adventure of Sinbad; that included him escaping from a cave by blinding a one-eyed giant, remarkably similar to the story of how Ulysses blinded the Cyclops of Greek mythology.
6. After going northwards, I finally met a herd of friendly grazing creatures. They looked like a mixture of cow and horse, but had only one horn. What type of beast was it?

Answer: Unicorn

Ah ha! Unicorns! I was in ecstasy as I remembered some unicorn legends. They were believed to be very noble creatures and were depicted on some seals of the Mohenjodaro civilisation of India. I recalled that they were also mentioned in the writings of Pliny and Aristotle. The stories described them as beautiful, but I realized how majestic they were after seeing them from so close.
7. Still walking, I came upon an extremely rocky patch of land. While crouching under a large rock, I saw the ugliest beings of that world. They were extremely large, hideous, and carnivorous and were called "Rakshasas", "Danavas" or "Asurs" in Indian mythology. Who were they?

Answer: Giants/Monsters

They were so hideous! I have heard them being referred to as either giants or monsters, but by whatever name you call them, they will remain ugly. I recognised their king- it was monster with ten heads. He was none other than Ravana, the main antagonist of the epic "Ramayana".
8. I was walking away, only to be met by another creature. He had the head of a man, but the body of a lion. Which type of creature was it?

Answer: Sphinx

The Sphinx appeared exactly like it was discovered in the Egyptian myths. It asked me a riddle, like it does to everyone who meets it and let me go after I had solved it. I was glad that I did not meet a manticore, who looks exactly like the sphinx, but was a vicious beast.
9. I shifted towards the sea and saw some beautiful maidens there. But wait, they did not have legs, but rather possessed a tail like a fish. So, which type of creature were they?

Answer: Mermaid

Of course! They were mermaids. Stories about them originated in Syria at about 1000 B.C. They were originally depicted as evil, and some believe that the Sirens of Greek mythology were also actually mermaids. The most famous mermaid tale is probably "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen. I don't think they are evil; they left me alone.
10. I was tired of all this walking and found it quite difficult to walk back to my teleporter. However, a kind winged horse gave me a ride back to it. He was truly special, as he was the same horse on whom Bellerophon rode to slay the Chimera. What is his name?

Answer: Pegasus

He was Pegasus. I could only imagine how brave he was to fight the Chimera; a monster with a lion's body, a snake's tail and three heads. Oh, the Chimera could also breathe fire. I felt as light as feather as I flew on his back. I reached my teleporter, said goodbye and returned to our world. I hope to return to that world again someday.
