The book takes place in Lucy Maud Montgomery's native home of Prince Edward Island and the first edition of the book was published in 1908.

Originally Mathew and Marialla wanted to adopt a boy to assist them with their work on the farm, but when Mathew arrived at the train station, he found Anne, sitting alone waiting with hopeful eyes.
