"Arabel's Raven" by Joan Aiken Quiz

The "Arabel and Mortimer" books have a very different tone from Joan Aiken's other works. However, you can see a bit of the goth influence in Mortimer's one spoken word: "Nevermore."

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did Mortimer join the Jones household?

Answer: Mr. Jones found him in the road

Mortimer had been run over by a motorcycle; Mr. Jones found him unconscious and brought him home to revive him. Mrs. Jones thought Arabel was too young to have a pet.
2. Mortimer will eat just about anything, but what is his favorite thing?

Answer: Stairs

"Gracious knows there's enough rubbish in the world!" Mrs. Jones says. "Why can't he eat soda bottles, or ice cream cartons, or used cars, or oil slicks, tell me that? But no! He has to eat the only thing that connects the upstairs to the downstairs."
3. How much did Mrs. Jones owe Round and Round, the record shop, for the spiral staircase Mortimer ate?

Answer: Eight hundred and seventeen pounds, seventy-two pence

Obviously, this was before decimal coinage! In the end, though, she didn't have to pay, because Mr. Round and Mr. Toby Round were revealed to be the Cash and Carat Boys, who had been robbing every shop in Rumbury except their own.
4. Arabel's cousins, Lindy, Cindy and Mindy, wanted to keep Mortimer for themselves.

Answer: False

Arabel's cousins were greedy, all right, but they did not want Mortimer. First they made fun of him, then, at their house, "he left a scene of such blackness and muddle behind him that I do not really think it would be worth trying to describe it."
5. Mortimer met Arabel's cousins on an excursion. Where did they go?

Answer: Roller-skating

Mortimer enjoyed roller-skating in the car park more than in the rink! Unfortunately, Arabel, who was already sick, got worse from being in the freezing air.
6. Where did Mortimer get to sleep when he was with Arabel in the hospital?

Answer: The breadbin

He had been sleeping in the coal scuttle, but decided he liked the breadbin better. After Mr. Jones raced home and back to get the breadbin, Mrs. Jones said now they'd have to keep the bread in the coal scuttle.
7. The night of the Furrier's Freewheeling Ball, who babysat for Arabel?

Answer: Chris Cross

"Not too noisy on that guitar, now," said Mr. Jones.
"I brought my trumpet, too; I'll play that instead if you like," said Chris.
Mr. Jones said the guitar would be better. "And no trumpet after eight, *definitely.*"
8. Chris was not supposed to take Arabel out of the house, but Arabel said it was all right because it was only five minutes before her bedtime. Why did they go out?

Answer: Both of these

I don't think I'd hire Chris as a babysitter. However, Arabel liked him, and she always seemed to get her way, and without throwing a fit, either!
9. When Rumbury was in a panic over Arabel, Mortimer and Chris's disappearance, what was NOT one of the perils that people thought had befallen them?

Answer: Rabid dogs

I love how the panic spreads, with the story getting more garbled every time someone repeats it. And when Mr. Finney, a volunteer firefighter, says, "Cripes, I'd best be off, they'll be wanting all the lads at that rate," I lose it. That's right out of a Simon Pegg film; I can just hear Nick Frost saying it!
10. Who illustrated "Arabel's Raven"?

Answer: Quentin Blake

Blake's style perfectly conveys the chaos Mortimer creates! Incidentally, Beth and Joe Krush illustrated the "Gone-Away" books by Elizabeth Enright, and N.M. Bodecker illustrated Edward Eager's works. Talented, all of them!
