Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's the dedication at the start of the book this time?

Answer: When we first met, you were pretty, and I was lonely. Now I am pretty lonely.

Yet another funny but dark dedication. The other dedications are from 'The Bad Beginning', 'The Wide Window' and 'The Carnivorous Carnival'.
2. What type of insects chased (and stung) Violet and Klaus?

Answer: Snow Gnats

71 of these vicious insects are also featured on the USA cover of the book.
3. Who's the real survivor of a fire?

Answer: Quigley Quagmire

The Baudelaires first met Isadora and Duncan Quagmire at Prufock Prep and were last seen in the self-sustaining hot-air balloon Hector made. Violet also seems to have a romantic interest with Quigley as seen in many pages of the book.
4. Who were the two people that were recently introduced and had 'an aura of menace'?

Answer: The man with a beard, but no hair and the woman with hair, but no beard

The two even scared Olaf and burned down the V.F.D. headquarters. Bruce is the Snow Scout master and (unfortunately) Carmelita's uncle. He was first seen in 'The Reptile Room'. The others are V.F.D. members except for Esme's sister and Olaf's brother, who I doubt really exist.
5. How many dishes did Sunny make for Olaf's troupe in the book?

Answer: 3

Breakfast- Cold Coffee
Lunch- Smoked Salmon
Dinner- False Spring Rolls
Although Sunny does an excellent job making the meals and the troupe even praises her, Olaf still says her cooking is horrible.
6. What does 'Set!' mean?

Answer: I knew you would find me!

Sunny said this when she saw Violet and Quigley reaching the top of Mount Fraught. Later, she even proves to Violet she's not a baby anymore, saying that in a proper sentence.
7. What did Esme's dress look like?

Answer: Fire

Violet, Klaus and Quigley plotted to capture her but backed out for noble reasons. They even allow Esme to be carried by them on a toboggan up the peak where she keeps on blabbering and shouting 'Musk!' However, she doesn't even know the real identities of the 'volunteers' until they reveal themselves later on.
8. What did Klaus suggest for 'X' in the Snow Scout Alphabet Pledge and what was the ridiculous original one?

Answer: xenial, xylophone

'Xenial' means 'hospitable' and definitely is better than 'xylophone'. However, Bruce says that nobody can change the pledge. Esme also mentions 'xylophone' in her pledge to bribe Carmelita.
9. What was the word that Esme repeated quite a few times in her pledge to bribe Carmelita into joining the villian side of the schism?

Answer: adorable

Some examples are 'adorable', 'quite adorable', 'really adorable' and 'zestfully adorable'. Anyway, she does manage to bribe her into joining Olaf and herself.
10. What is the final clue to 'The Grim Grotto'?

Answer: Mushrooms

Although all these have more or less significance in 'The Grim Grotto', the mushrooms can be spotted on some rocks in The Stricken Stream, representing the Medusiod Mycellium.

Well, congratulations, you've survived the deadly quiz. The world is quiet here, Seagerald.
