Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lupus' mother is dead.

Answer: False

Whilst she is not dead to the physical world as such, she is dead to her old life, as it were. When she saw his Uncle cut out Lupus' tongue, she made a vow to the god Apollo that if he preserved his life, she would give him hers in turn. A vow of servitude. She became a Priestess in a Sanctuary of Apollo, cutting off all ties to her old life and serving only him.
The sad twist in the story is that, if he had found out only a few days, or even hours before, he could have seen her and she might not have honoured the vow.
We discover this in "The Colossus of Rhodes".
2. It is a toss up as to whether Lupus or Jonathan is the unluckier of the male protagonists. On the one hand, Lupus has had his tongue cut out, been torn away from his home and thrown into a foreign land and forced to beg on the streets for two years, and all before he had even turned nine. On the other hand, Jonathan, either through his own actions, one of Flavia's schemes, or through sheer misfortune, has found himself in slavery, or nearly in slavery on how many occasions in the first nine books?

Answer: 4

. In "The Pirates of Pompeii", Jonathan, along with Flavia and Nubia, are captured by a band of Runaway Slaves who are kidnapping children after the eruption of Mt Vesuvius and selling them into slavery themselves.

In "The Assassins of Rome", Jonathan goes to Rome when he discovers that his mother might still be alive. He goes to the Golden House of Emperor Nero with his Uncle Simeon - a Siccarius (hired assassin whose weapon of choice is a sica - a small curved blade similar to a scythe or a sickle) hired to assassinate the new Emperor Titus. When he and Simeon go to the palace disguised as musicians to perform for Titus, they are auditioned by Titus' younger brother Domitian, and Simeon is uncovered by Yoseph ben Matthias, now known as Titus Flavius Josephus, servant of the emperor. Jonathan is branded with the emperor's mark and moved in with the other Jewish slaves.

At the end of "The Enemies of Jupiter" Jonathan enrols himself in a Gladiatorial School when he believes himself responsible for setting Rome ablaze. Whilst technically a freeborn child and so ineligible to enrol (freeborns had to be 25), he had (albeit briefly) been a slave, and, with the brand to prove it, the conscriptors could see no reason to refuse him. Voluntary enslavement was a common practice for people who had trouble paying off debts and kind masters and mistresses would often set aside a small amount for their slaves so that, after long and faithful service, the slaves could buy their freedom. Gladiators earned their freedom, usually signified with the presentation of a wooden sword and a sack of gold, by completing a non-specific number of fights.

In "The Colossus of Rhodes", once again children are going missing and it is discovered that there is a new Bully on the Playground. As they travel to the Greek Island of Symi to find Lupus' mother, they also travel to (relatively) nearby Rhodes to try to save the children being kidnapped by lackeys of the infamous Colossus of Rhodes, and end up nearly being sold into slavery themselves.
3. When Flavia solves her first mystery in "The Thieves of Ostia", that of her father's stolen signet ring, she finds herself in mortal peril; stuck up a tree surrounded by a pack of wild dogs. She meets Jonathan for the first time when he saves her by attacking them with which weapon?

Answer: a sling and stone

In this instance Jonathan uses his sling to save Flavia from the dogs. Later in the same books, he uses a bow and arrow to save Lupus from the pack.
4. In "The Dolphins of Laurentum" we discover that Lupus is an accomplished diver. He used to go sponge diving with his father and he enjoyed it very much. However sponge diving, if done too frequently, is a dangerous activity. According to Lupus, how many dives should you stop after, in a day?

Answer: 7

When diving deep, the pressure on the skull becomes immense. After 7 dives there is a strong chance of nose and ears beginning to bleed. After that, the bleeding becomes much more severe and you start to cramp up, and there is a good chance of losing sight in one or both eyes - this is what happens to Venalicius.
5. In "The Thieves of Ostia", when they were being chased by Venalicius' men, the children found themselves in the grounds of a synagogue. A man with a long beard in a turban approaches them and tells Jonathan that he is not welcome there. Why?

Answer: Christian

In Roman society Jews were looked down upon but accepted in most communities. Christians, however were considered subversive by both Romans and Jews alike. They were considered to preach dangerous teachings which completely opposed what all good Jews stood for, and the Romans were simply afraid of what they didn't understand.

The penalty for practicing Christianity varied from community to community, from ostracizing to imprisonment, to death by stoning or fighting for their lives in the local games.
6. In "The Twelve Tasks of Flavia Gemina" which dance does Flavia take part in to purge herself of her infatuation with Publius Pollius Felix?

Answer: Tarantella

The Tarantella, named after the spider "tarantula", was a frenzied dance, often danced by desperate women who had been overcome by passion of which they wanted to be freed. In Flavia's case, the passion of first love; the tarantula's bite.
Nubia also took part in the dance, wanting to free herself of her feelings for their tutor, Aristo.
7. In "The Pirates of Pompeii", what finally causes Nubia to snap, and run away with the Slave from The Jackel Clan?

Answer: Pulchra snaps her wooden flute

For Nubia, not only was the flute a release for her, in terms of the music that she played on it, it was also a link to her family. She named each note after a member of her family; the lowest note, for example, being her father, and the highest her unborn brother. As irrational as it was in retrospect, at the time it felt like losing her family all over again.
Pulchra does not actually lock her up in the chest, but rather keeps her own slave girl there.
8. In "The Assassins of Rome", whom did Queen Berenice send the Sicarii to assassinate?

Answer: Both Susannah and Titus

In a rather convoluted plot, where it is not clear until the very end when explained by Titus' Slave Rachel, Queen Berenice is angered by Titus' friendship with Susannah and by her own treatment at Titus' hands, and sends the Sicarii to first kill Susannah for her effecting her husband, and then kill Titus once he has knowledge of her murder.
Rizpah wasn't in any danger whatsoever. She is a little girl born and raised in the Golden House who helps Jonathan acclimatise to life there.
9. In "The Gladiators From Capua", at the games, Nubia captured a 'Gladiator' ball, which entitled her to a gladiator of her choosing. She used this ball to free her brother Taharquo.

Answer: False

Rich citizens would often buy gladiators in auctions for personal slaves. They were, as a general rule, quick and strong and had an air of mystery about them due to the masks they wore in combat. Men would buy them for labour, and women either for labour or for husbands. Nubia has just such an opportunity (although as a 10 year old she was not entertaining such thoughts).

However, her ball, as much of a gift as it appears to be, provides her with a heart-wrenching dilemma. Not only is her brother one of the competing gladiators, they also discover that Jonathan is another.

She chooses her friend, only after discovering that her brother is truly happy with the gladiators' lifestyle.
10. In "The Enemies of Jupiter", they mistakenly identify a body found in the fire as that of Jonathan. What is this false identifier?

Answer: Rings

After the apparently failed reunion he initiated between his mother and father, Jonathan flees the palace and winds up in a rough part of town. He is mugged and they strip him of his rings, his herb pouch and some of his clothes before Agathus chases them off. Obviously the boy with the rings perished in the fire
