Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Get a new water bowl for the cat

Answer: Pet shop

Pet shops usually have lots of items for cats and dogs. They can generally supply your needs for other small mammals - mice, gerbils, rats, hamsters, even rabbits and ferrets. Some also have material for other small animals such as the fish in a home aquarium, but you might need to go to a specialist fish shop for that.
2. Look for a new brand of shampoo

Answer: Hairdresser

Hairdressers do more than just cut and style your hair. You can get it colored, or have hair extensions and weaves. Some also offer hand and nail care. And, more importantly for me, you can buy hair care products that are recommended as being appropriate for your type of hair - sometimes it's nice to get advice from an expert before you buy.
3. Buy a box of nails to hang the new picture

Answer: Hardware store

The term hardware originally referred to items made of metal, such as nails and screws, and the tools associated with them. Many people now associate the term with computers (the physical object, as opposed to the software, programs which actually make it work), but hardware suppliers still exist, and provide a range of tools and materials for the home handyman as well as for professionals.
4. Pick up the necklace that has been repaired

Answer: Jewelers

Jewelers sell jewelry - necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc. - as well as often carrying a range of decorative china and glass items. Many jewelers also repair damaged items, so when the clasp that holds the two ends of my necklace together broke, I took it to the jewelers to get it fixed.
5. Drop off the dirty jacket

Answer: Dry cleaner

Some items of clothing will be damaged if you wash them with water and laundry detergent, so they are best sent to a dry cleaners when they are dirty. Dry cleaning isn't actually dry - it does use liquids, but they are special chemicals that are selected to remove dirt from materials that don't tolerate water.
6. Pick up a loaf of bread for lunch

Answer: Baker

A loaf of bread will be useful if I plan to make sandwiches for lunch. Bakers usually make a lot of different kinds of bread and bread rolls - my list tells me to get a loaf of multi-grain bread, pre-sliced, so we can assemble the sandwiches quickly. Some also make other kinds of baked goods, including doughnuts, pies and cakes.
7. Buy new sheets to replace the ones the dog shredded

Answer: Bedding store

There's a long story behind the need for this stop - let's just say that a sheet hanging on the line, waving in the wind as it dries, can be very tempting to a small dog running in the backyard at the time. Bedding stores may carry beds and mattresses, or they may just have the fittings - sheets, pillows, pillowcases, blankets, duvets, bedspreads, what-have-you.
8. Get a set of guitar strings

Answer: Music store

Music stores sell not only musical instruments, but also the bits that wear out and need to be replaced. Stringed instruments like guitars need to have the strings replaced on a regular basis. Woodwind instruments, such as the clarinet, need to have their reeds replaced.
9. Buy some steaks for dinner

Answer: Butcher

Butchers provide meat that has been prepared for eating - while you could take home half a steer for your freezer, you probably don't have the expertise to cut it up into the right size and shape of pieces to cook. As well as preparing fresh meats, some butchers also prepare pickled and corned meats, as well as sausages of various kinds.
10. Select a variety of lettuces for tonight's salad

Answer: Greengrocer

Greengrocers don't just sell green stuff, such as the different kinds of lettuce I plan to select for my mixed salad. (In case you were wondering, I plan to use romaine, baby spinach and rocket tonight.) They also have a wide range of fruits and vegetables - and if you get to know the owner, you may be able to arrange to have a special order of something they don't usually carry, provided it can be found at the market.
