Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which continent did Kwame, the earth Planeteer, come from in "Captain Planet and the Planeteers"?

Answer: Africa

Kwame discovered his earth ring while planting trees in the middle of a hot African savanna. Kwame was the unofficial leader of the Planeteers. With his earth power, Kwame could create earthquakes and build his own islands. He was often the one who started the combination of the Planeteers' powers in order to summon Captain Planet. Kwame was voiced by actor LeVar Burton, who was famous for playing the character Geordi LaForge in "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

He was also the host for the children's television series "Reading Rainbow".
2. Wheeler, the fire Planeteer, was shown to have lived in Brooklyn, which is part of what American city?

Answer: New York

Wheeler was the Planeteer who represented North America. He came from Brooklyn, one of the five boroughs of New York City (the city in the photograph). Wheeler got his fire ring after he saved a man from being mugged in an alleyway. The ring shot up from a fiery trash can beside him. Wheeler was brash and hotheaded and often provided some comic relief with his witty comments.

He also had a crush on fellow Planeteer Linka.
3. The wind Planeteer, Linka was said to come from a European country that broke up in 1991. Which of these was it?

Answer: The Soviet Union

The "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" cartoon first came out in 1990. During the shows credits, Linka was said to have come from the Soviet Union. In 1991, the Soviet Union broke up into several countries, with the largest being Russia, where Linka was from.

After this, Linka was said to have come from Eastern Europe in the credits. Linka was caring but had a tendency to be grumpy. Linka received her wind ring from a bird as she was playing on her portable keyboard. The picture shows a picture of Moscow, the capital city of Russia.
4. What type of marine animal gave Gi, the water Planeteer, her ring in the first episode of "Captain Planet and the Planeteers"?

Answer: dolphin

Gi was the Planeteer who represented Asia, though it was not revealed which country she was from. Gi was known to be a very good swimmer and enjoyed spending time with marine animals. She received her water ring when a dolphin (the animal in the photograph) she was swimming with tossed it over to her.

Her parents were both marine biologists which would explain why Gi loved the ocean so much.
5. Which of these locations was associated with Ma-Ti, the Planeteer who wielded the power of heart?

Answer: Amazon Rainforest

Ma-Ti was the youngest of the Planeteers and represented the continent of South America. He was a member of the Kayapo, a native tribe that lived in the Amazon Rainforest (as shown in the photo). Ma-Ti's heart ring allowed him to connect to the minds of all the other Planeteers.

He could feel their feelings and hear their thoughts. Since there were only five Planeteers, there was no one who represented the continents of Australia and Antarctica.
6. What was Captain Planet's signature catchphrase, which he shouted out during the show's credits?

Answer: The power is yours!

Captain Planet emerged whenever the Planeteers combined their five ring powers to which he always exclaimed "By your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!". Captain Planet had grass green hair, light blue skin and a red superhero costume with a yellow globe on his chest.

When Captain Planet was no longer needed, he would always say "The power is yours!" before he disappeared, restoring the powers back to the Planeteers' rings. The picture is a solar power tower that was built in Spain.
7. Which villain from "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" has the same name as a video game character?

Answer: Duke Nukem

Duke Nukem was one of the most dangerous villains in "Captain Planet and the Planeteers". His skin was made of stone (similar to The Thing from "The Fantastic Four"), which gave him the ability to generate radioactive energy. Duke Nukem often wore a Hawaiian shirt, a bathing suit and flip-flops.

He shared his name with the video game character Duke Nukem, who first appeared in 1991. Despite sharing the same name, the two characters are not related to one another. The photograph shows a picture of Three Mile Island, a nuclear power plant that was involved in an accident in 1979.
8. Which of the following characters was NOT a villain in the "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" cartoon?

Answer: Smog MacKenzie

Hoggish Greedly was the first villain encountered by the Planeteers during the show's first episode. He was a fat man with a pig-like face and had a scrawny sidekick named Rigger. Looten Plunder was a dapper looking businessman who was always looking for a nice eco-scam.

He was featured in the show's ending credits with his signature phrase "You'll pay for this, Captain Planet!". Verminous Skumm was a villain that looked like a large rat. There was no Smog MacKenzie. The picture shows a cloud of smog above the city of Los Angeles, California.
9. What was the name of Ma-Ti's pet monkey in "Captain Planet and the Planeteers"?

Answer: Suchi

Suchi was rescued from a leopard by Ma-Ti in the first episode of "Captain Planet and the Planeteers". After being rescued, Suchi gave Ma-Ti his ring and went with him when he was brought to Hope Island. In addition to reading thoughts, Ma-Ti's heart ring gave him the ability to interact with wild animals, some of whom would help the Planeteers get out of some tough jams.
10. Who was known as the Spirit of the Earth in the "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" cartoon?

Answer: Gaia

The Planeteers were formed by Gaia, the Spirit of the Earth. She lived on the fictional Hope Island and brought the Planeteers together after being awoken from a century-old slumber only to find her planet on the verge of death due to widespread pollution. Gaia was voiced by actress Whoopi Goldberg for the first three seasons of the cartoon. Gaia (aka Gaea) was the goddess of the Earth according to Greek mythology.
