All fairies, except Lucinda, conceal their true nature. As far as Ella's father knew, Mandy was simply the cook -- even Ella didn't know, until after her mother died.

Although she's seen him before, they've never been close enough to talk. He knew Ella's mother and has clearly been crying when he approaches Ella.

Due to the constant commands and her forced obedience, she eventually attains excellence at all of these subjects, but she only enjoys the subject in which the Mistress doesn't issue orders.

Prince Char's parents are still living, he has no uncle that we know of and certainly no cartoonish evil snake hanging around, and as for the magical book -- it is simply that, a book, with no further explanation for its existence.

Lucinda believes that this gift will give the couple "companionship and felicitous union" and willfully ignores her fellow fairies' explanations as to how her gift is bound to backfire.

Answer: Marry a rich old man so her father could pay off his debts

As it turns out, the old man is not so rich, so she's off the hook. No one told her to kill the prince, although she feared such a thing; the prince himself gave Ella a centaur as a gift; and her father's marriage to Olga was not so loveless, thanks to yet another of Lucinda's well-intentioned but unappreciated gifts. And yes, Ella's father really was this nasty in the book.

The rug was actually a gift from Mandy to Ella's mother; Ella's noticing the rug and asking Mandy about it was in fact the beginning of the revelation that Mandy was her fairy godmother.
