Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Winter Wrap Up", Twilight has trouble finding a team with which she can "wrap up winter" because she is not very good with anything involving manual labor. She first attempts to join the weather team, captained by Rainbow Dash, but she is quickly turned away as she has no wings and therefore cannot clear the clouds away. However, who IS on the weather team despite not being a pegasus?

Answer: Pinkie Pie

Pinkie Pie is technically on the weather team (as evidenced by her blue vest) because she helps to break up the ice over the frozen lake near Ponyville. Twilight attempts to help with this, too, but she doesn't know how to ice skate, which is how Pinkie is breaking up the ice.

Applejack is in charge of clearing the snow off the fields so crops can be planted, Rarity is making birds' nests, and Fluttershy is waking up the hibernating animals. Twilight tries all of these to no avail. Eventually, though, she discovers that she is fantastic at organization, which is something Ponyville has been having a problem with for the past few Winter Wrap Ups, and she is able to help the town speedily prepare for spring.
2. In "Call of the Cutie", Apple Bloom tries several different activities to get her cutie mark. Which of these is NOT one of those activities?

Answer: Kung fu

Apple Bloom is sick of being teased for being the only one in her class not to have her cutie mark, which is a mark on the flank that symbolizes what a pony's special talent is. She petitions Rainbow Dash for help, and, in addition to the above activities, Dash introduces her to hang gliding and karate. Of course, none of these things work, and Apple Bloom is dejected until she meets Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle, two fillies who also don't have cutie marks yet, and together, the three form the Cutie Mark Crusaders.
3. "Fall Weather Friends" introduces us to the more competitive side of Applejack and Rainbow Dash, who participate in lots of activities to settle once and for all who the most athletic pony is. While Applejack starts off strong, Rainbow Dash ends up cheating by using her wings to win most of the contests. Which of these is NOT a contest that Rainbow Dash wins?

Answer: Hay-bale-throwing

Rainbow Dash throws her hay bale first, but while she's busy mocking Applejack, she gets flattened by the other bale, making Applejack the winner.

In the push-up contest, Rainbow Dash and Applejack both make it to 99 push-ups, but Dash uses her wings to hover herself off the ground for the 100th, while Applejack collapses from exhaustion.

Applejack almost wins the barrel race, but she nicks one of the barrels passing it, which gives her a ten-second time penalty.

In the third-to-last contest, the two ponies have to carry baby chicks across a muddy stretch of ground. Applejack is doing fairly well, but the chicks on her back become annoyed from all the mud being splashed up and climb onto Rainbow Dash, who has her wings extended to act as a sort of mudguard.
4. "Suited for Success" shows Rarity attempting to make dresses for her five best friends, yet being unable to satisfy any of them. For instance, Twilight wants a dress with the constellations of the night sky all over it. How many stars for Orion's belt was Rarity going to put on the dress BEFORE Twilight corrects her?

Answer: 4

According to Twilight, "Orion's Belt has three stars, NOT four." Evidently the constellations in Equestria are the same as they are here on Earth.

This episode is a favorite of anyone who has ever had to make something for a client, as it showcases the many problems that any creative person has with pleasing a customer.

For example, Twilight Sparkle is the one who wants something very, very, VERY specific, A.K.A. anal-retentive. "That constellation is Canis MAJOR, not Minor."

Pinkie Pie is the one who wants the gown to perfectly reflect her and who believes that she is the only one who knows who "she" is. "Don't you think my gown would be more ME with some lollipops?"

Applejack is the one who has no experience with the product she's ordering and therefore has only bad decisions when it comes to what the final product should look like. "What if it rains? Galoshes!"

Fluttershy is the one who wants something, but won't tell you what. "Um...it's...nice."

Rainbow Dash is the one who knows what she wants, but can't describe it effectively. "Just make it look cooler!"

Suffice it to say, all of their dresses wind up looking terrible, and Rarity doesn't even have time to finish her own dress. Fortunately, the five realize their mistake, finish Rarity's dress for her, and accept the fact that Rarity's original designs were genius after all.
5. "Feeling Pinkie Keen" starts off with Twilight attempting a bit of transmutation magic. Which of these is she NOT trying to do?

Answer: Turn gems into shoes

All of these were being done on Spike. She managed to do the suit and cane, but when she tried to do the top hat, she was distracted by Pinkie Pie, and the enormous rock turned from a top hat back into a rock, falling on Spike's head and knocking him for a loop.

This episode introduces us to Pinkie Pie's "Pinkie Sense", with which she can sense minor events just before they happen. Twilight tries to figure out some scientific method for explaining this, but, in the end, she accepts that she never will be able to.

This episode is controversial because many people viewed it as addressing the debate of science vs. religion, but the writers have said that those were not their intentions. The episode was actually meant to show that sometimes there are just some things you can't explain, and instead of going insane trying to explain them, you should just accept that those things happen and move on with your life.
6. Which story from Greek mythology is very blatantly alluded to near the end of "Sonic Rainboom"?

Answer: Icarus and Daedalus

All of Rainbow Dash's friends want to see her compete in the Best Young Flyers' Competition, but the competition is being held in Cloudsdale, a city made of clouds that only pegasi can reach and walk on. Twilight attempts to solve this by making wings for all of her friends, starting with Rarity. Unfortunately, the wing-making spell proves too difficult to perform more than once, so she instead casts a simple cloud-walking spell on herself, Applejack, and Pinkie Pie and flies to Cloudsdale in her hot-air balloon. Twilight warns Rarity that her wings are very delicate, being made of gossamer and morning dew. Along the course of their tour of Cloudsdale, Rarity decides that she also wants to enter the contest. During the competition, however, Rarity flies too close to the sun, and her wings melt, paralleling the myth of Icarus and his wings made out of wax, who was warned by his father not to fly too close to the sun for the same reason. Fortunately, Rainbow Dash is able to save her from forming a new crater in the ground below Cloudsdale.

As many pegasi as there are in this episode, it has nothing to do with Bellerophon.
7. "Stare Master" is the second episode to heavily feature the Cutie Mark Crusaders. Which of these is NOT a way they attempt to earn their cutie marks in this episode?

Answer: Cake decorators

The CMC frequently shout their intentions excitedly in the format "Cutie Mark Crusader x! Yay!", e.g. "Cutie Mark Crusader sleepover at Fluttershy's cottage! Yay!"

Fluttershy agrees to foalsit the Cutie Mark Crusaders to keep them out of Rarity's mane, as Rarity has a lot of dress orders to fill and needs to eliminate all distractions. Unfortunately, the CMC run off into the Everfree Forest trying to catch one of Fluttershy's escaped chickens, and Fluttershy is forced to follow them to get them back before they run into trouble. Of course, they do run into trouble, quickly finding a cockatrice, which is a creature that turns animals to stone by looking them in the eyes. Fluttershy gets her Crowning Moment of Awesome when she actually STARES DOWN the cockatrice, intimidating it into de-stoning the runaway chicken and Twilight, who apparently encountered the cockatrice while on her way to Zecora's. Because of this, the Cutie Mark Crusaders give Fluttershy the title of "Stare Master", hence the title.
8. "The Show Stoppers" is all about a foal-only talent competition being held in Ponyville. In the end, awards are presented to winners in various categories. Which of these groups does NOT win an award?

Answer: Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon

There aren't very many entrants in this talent show, so I suppose winning an award isn't too difficult.

Snips and Snails win "Best Magic Act", Sunny Days and Peachy Pie win "Best Dramatic Performance", and the Cutie Mark Crusaders win "Best Comedy Act", despite entering into the "Dramatic" category. Of course, their dramatic retelling of their quest/homage to '80s glam rock is such a disaster that everypony bursts out laughing at the end.

We do see Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon, and Twist onstage as the awards are being given out, so I suppose they are the only other competitors.
9. "A Dog and Pony Show" shows Rarity getting captured by a group of anthropomorphic dogs who call themselves the Diamond Dogs. Which of these is NOT one of their names?

Answer: Rex

According to Lauren Faust, the creator of "Friendship Is Magic", the Diamond Dogs' names were given in the script as Fido, Rover, and Spot. However, she doesn't recall which one is which.

After getting captured, her friends do quickly set off to save her, but they don't actually need to do anything. Rarity manages to convince the Diamond Dogs to let her go...by WHINING. They even give her six minecarts full of gems just so she'll go away! In my opinion, it's one of the funniest scenes in the entire series. It also shows that Rarity can take care of herself in a crisis. As Twilight puts it, "Just because somepony is ladylike doesn't make her weak."
10. In "Green Isn't Your Color", Fluttershy becomes a fashion model under the guidance of an eccentric photographer named Photo Finish. Which real-life figure is this character based on?

Answer: Anna Wintour

Anna Wintour is the editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine, best known for being fictionalized in the 2003 novel and 2006 movie "The Devil Wears Prada".

When Photo Finish comes to Ponyville to see if Rarity's new fashion line is good enough for her photographs, she instead becomes enamored with the model displaying the dresses, Fluttershy, and immediately whisks her away to fame and fortune. Jealous of her newfound success, Rarity eventually tries to sabotage Fluttershy on the runway, though it ends up making her even more popular due to her perceived bold new style of modeling. As it turns out, though, Fluttershy hates all the attention and the lack of privacy that she has as a model. Each apologizes to the other for the misunderstanding, and they go on their merry way.
