Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is one of the outer rings of defense around the earl's castle. We throw all sorts of nasty refuse here, and the garderobe empties here as well. Where am I?

Answer: moat

Most people don't know this, but the main purpose of the moat is to prevent enemies from tunneling under the castle. The water from the moat will cause any tunnel to collapse.
2. I am passing through the gatehouse of the castle. What is it called?

Answer: barbican

The entrance to the castle is the most vulnerable part for obvious reasons. The barbican is a gatehouse that has a small tower on each side. The earl's constable lives here. It is one of the safest places in the castle.
3. At night this metal or wooden grating is lowered to give the people in the castle extra security. What is it called?

Answer: portcullis

In our castle there are two; if we are under attack the portcullis closest to the inside is closed first. Then, when the other one closes, our enemies are trapped like rats.
4. I have been sent by the earl to find his lady and give her a message. Where will she most likely be spending the afternoon?

Answer: solar

The solar is the private apartment of the earl and his lady. Because it is located on the most protected side of the castle, it has windows instead of slits, and lots of sunlight. Milady and her attendants do a lot of sewing and gossiping (but you didn't hear that from me!) in the solar. It is easily the castle's most comfortable room.
5. Sometimes I am so busy that I have to run to keep up with my errands! I am to find the earl in the lists and tell him that we have just heard news that the king plans to arrive tomorrow. Where in the castle are the lists located?

Answer: bailey

The bailey is an open courtyard. Our castle has an inner bailey where the kitchen and granary are located, and an outer bailey where the stables, garden, and exercise yard can be found. When I finally found the earl, he was practising sword play with one of his knights.
6. Finally it is lunchtime! We all eat together in this main room of the castle.

Answer: great hall

The Great Hall is the center of castle life. Meals are served there, court cases are heard, and in the evening there may be dancing, music, and games. At night the tables are moved and many of the castle workers (including me) sleep there.
7. Now I have to deliver feathers to the smithy or armory. What is made there?

Answer: weapons

The armorer's job is very important. It is his responsibility to make sure the knights have armor, and plenty of bows and arrows. And who do you think repairs all that chain mail?
8. Big news! The earl has captured an enemy knight and put him in his jail, which is known by what name?

Answer: dungeon

The dungeon is not a nice place. This particular enemy knight must not be someone very important. The earl would never risk the life of an important prisoner by putting him in such filth and squalor - he wouldn't want to risk having the prisoner die and lose out on the ransom.
9. The earl takes very good care of all of us. If Warwick is ever under attack those of us who are not fighting will go to the stronghold of the castle. What is it called?

Answer: keep

The keep is also called the donjon. It is usually the tallest and strongest structure in the castle. During a siege or attack it is the last line of defense.
10. Not that I am complaining, but being a page is hard work! What, with all the errands to run, manners to learn, Bible verses, singing, dancing, and practising my lute, I barely have time to sleep. I cannot wait until I am thirteen or fourteen, which is when I will take up what position with the earl?

Answer: squire

Little does Henry know, but the squire has a pretty tough job too! Not only does he have to care for his knight's horse, armor, and weapons, but he also has to attend his knight on the battlefield, practice the art of war, and guard prisoners.
