Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who should we invite to the medieval tournament? Medieval soldiers. What are they called?

Answer: Knights

I am training to become a knight, but at seven years old, I am still a page. When I am about thirteen, I will become a squire, and will be knighted after I prove myself in battle.
2. There are other people who can participate in the tournament, other than medieval soldiers. What are these participants called?

Answer: Squires

Squires may participate in the tournament because they help the knights with their armour, horses, and weapons. As a page, I can be in the gallery, but that is all. (Heavy sigh)
3. Why do we hold medieval tournaments? The main reason is to give people an excuse to get together.

Answer: False

The main reason is to help soldiers stay in shape when they are not fighting. In my opinion, the knights love the tournaments best because they can show off to the ladies, and win prizes.
4. On what day of the week will we never hold a medieval tournament?

Answer: Sunday

Sunday, of course, is the Lord's Day. We are really limited by the church as to when tournaments can be held. For example, due to the "Truce of God" we cannot fight (or tourney) from sundown on Wednesday until Monday morning, in respect of the time Jesus suffered and died on the cross. It is also improper to hold tournaments during Advent or Lent.
5. One of the events my lord is planning for the medieval tournament is done with soldiers and their horses. What is this called?

Answer: Joust

Jousting events are practised and held on the lists, a fenced off area near the lord's castle. The quintain is a machine the soldiers use when they practise the joust. Kippers are people employed by the soldiers to steal "spoils of combat" at the tournament. Yikes! I guess things can get out of hand pretty quickly at these events!
6. In the tournament event with medieval soldiers and their horses, which weapon is most likely to come in handy?

Answer: Lance

During the joust, the squire must be nearby to help his soldier. One of his responsibilities is to hand him his lance. Each soldier runs the lists three times with each opponent. That's a lot of lances!
7. My lord, Richard Neville, has decided that his medieval tournament will be a "tirocinium." What does that mean?

Answer: Only the newest, youngest soldiers can participate.

It is hard to be a new soldier, and have to compete in tournaments against men who are experienced and battle proven. My Lord Richard is a fair man. He wants to give the new soldiers a chance to gain experience with less danger of being hurt.
8. One thing my Lord Richard must do when planning his tournament is to make sure he upholds the "Statute of Arms" issued Edward I. It specifies that all the weapons shall be wooden.

Answer: False

The "Statue of Arms" stated that all weapons had to be blunted. This is really the wise thing to do, as it cuts down on injuries and even deaths. Why would anyone want to lose their best soldier during a tournament, when they are really needed for war?
9. As the Earl of Warwick plans his medieval tournament, he may include team events.

Answer: True

There are two team events that are my personal favorites. One, "melee a pied," is a team of knights fighting on foot. The other, "melee a cheval," is a team of knights fighting on horseback.
10. As always, Lord Richard will remind all of those participating in the medieval tournament about the code of chivalry. What does this mean that they will do?

Answer: Behave as Christian gentlemen.

Of course, there are many things to learn about chivalry, and I haven't mastered all of them yet. I think I understand the concept of loyalty, but I am still working on "every lover regularly turns pale in the presence of his beloved." What?
