Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the sequel to Alison Lester's 'Noni the Pony', where does Noni go?

Answer: Beach

'Noni the Pony Goes to the Beach' is a rhyming picture book for the very young (it is listed as being for ages 1+). Noni and her friends Dave Dog and Coco the Cat are heading off to enjoy a day at the beach, along with the cows that live next door.
2. What is the name of the pony that Ginny's parents rent her in 'Summer Pony', by Jean Slaughter Doty?

Answer: Mokey

Ginny was so excited when her parents agreed to rent her a pony for the summer, and so disappointed when Mokey arrived, because he was a rescue pony, dirty and scrawny, not at all the pony of her dreams. But he turns out to give her a very special summer.
3. 'Foals in the Field' by Ben Baglio is part of a series of books about a veterinary surgery called Animal ___. What word completes the name?

Answer: Ark

Mandy Hope helps Nick Summers take care of the twin foals born on his farm, because he is too busy trying to save the farm to give them all the attention they need. How will Dot and Dash fare? Warning - the ending may bring on tears.
4. Which of these is NOT one of the three central characters in the 'Saddle Club' series?

Answer: Julia

Carole Hanson, Stevie Lake, and Lisa Atwood are three horse-crazy friends, aged 12 and 13 at the start of the series. The first book, 'Horse Crazy', was written by Bonnie Bryant, but many of the subsequent books (over a hundred were produced between 1988 and 2001) were ghost-written.
5. What color was Jerry in the book of the same name written by Ursula Dubosarsky and illustrated by Patricia Mullins?

Answer: White

This book is listed as being suitable for children age 5+, and can be tackled by those just starting to read, or be treated as a picture book for younger children. Martha has always been fascinated by white horses, and Jerry is no exception, even if he is old and less than sprightly. (And yes, he is technically grey, but not in her eyes.)
6. What is the name of the ranger from whom the pony needs to be hidden in 'Hide that Horse' by David Metzenthen?

Answer: Dooley

Tim and Mr Conroy are the two trying to hide a Shetland pony named Percy from the horse-hating Ranger Dooley. The charming illustrations are by Leigh Hobbs.
7. 'Horse _____: The Complete Adventures of Bonnie and Sam' is a collection of stories written by Alison Lester. What word is missing from its title?

Answer: Crazy

Illustrated by Roland Harvey, this is a collection of four stories: 'The Shadow Brumby', 'The Circus Pony', 'Racing the Tide' and 'Saving Mr Pinto'. They feature Bonnie, who is a horse-whisperer, and Sam, who always knows what the horses need.
8. What kind of horse is the title character of 'Midnight', written by Mark Greenwood and illustrated by Frane Lessac?

Answer: Mare

This is a nonfiction book about Lieutenant Guy Haydon and his mare Midnight, who were part of the Australian Light Horse regiments that participated in one of the memorable cavalry charges of World War I, in 1917. Midnight got her name both because she was born at around that time, and because she was a black horse with a white star on her forehead.
9. In 'Lightning Jack' by Glenda Millard, against the ghost of which famous Australian racehorse does Sam race Lightning Jack?

Answer: Phar Lap

Sam spies Lightning Jack in amongst the brumbies being mustered, and the horse immediately captured his fancy. Their subsequent (possibly not entirely factual) adventures include an encounter with the famous bushranger New Kelly.
10. In 'For Sale or Swap', by Alyssa Brugman, what is the name of the girl who trades her reliable, but not very pretty, pony for one which she sees advertised?

Answer: Shelby

Shelby is convinced that she will make better progress at Pony Club with a better-looking horse, so she trades Blue for Maxshine Celtic Copper, a beautiful pony that she thinks will be the answer to her dreams. But the new pony's nickname (Brat) turns out to be well-deserved, and its lovely brown coat disappeared on the first wash. Maybe not such a good idea, after all.
11. What was the name of the horse who featured in 'Warhorse', by Michael Morpurgo?

Answer: Joey

Albert's father sold Joey to the army, and they were separated because Albert was too young to enlist. The story follows Joey through the horrors of the battlefields in Europe during World War I, culminating in his reunion with Albert.
12. In what country is 'Battle of the Jade Horse', by Alison Lloyd, set?

Answer: China

Hu and Ren are best friends in this sequel to 'The Year of the Tiger', set in northern China during the Han dynasty. They find themselves caught up in the confrontation between local warlords and the far-off Emperor. One of the sources of dispute is a herd of horses being rounded up for the Emperor.
13. What is the name of the horse who features in 'Loyal Creatures' by Morris Gleitzman?

Answer: Daisy

Sixteen-year-old Will and his horse Daisy travel from the Australian Outback to fight in the Middle East during World War I. Their experience with desert conditions proves invaluable in helping the survival of their entire regiment.

The inscription at the start of the book is taken from a memorial in Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens to the Australian Horses in World War One:

"They suffered wounds, thirst, hunger
and weariness almost beyond endurance,
but never failed.
They did not come home."
14. What is the name of the girl who is forced to walk away from a pony who is stuck in quicksand at the start of 'The Quicksand Pony' by Alison Lester?

Answer: Biddy

When her father tells her there is nothing they can do for Bella, Biddy sadly leaves with him. The next day, when she returns, she sees three sets of footprints, including Bella's, in the sand, and sets off to find out what is going on.
15. What is the name of the titular pony from Chincoteague in the book by Marguerite Henry?

Answer: Misty

There was a real-life Misty, but the details of her life are not exactly those of this story, which recounts how two children catch a pony mare during the annual roundup of the wild horses on Assateague Island. Phantom gave birth to Misty, and Paul and Maureen care for the two, before they release Phantom to return to the wild as part of the herd led by Pied Piper.

This was the first in a series of books based on Misty that Marguerite Henry wrote.
