Darrell had initially asked Mary-Lou who said she couldn't as she was going out with Gwen. Darrell then asked Sally who also refused. So, Darrell asked Emily at last and she agreed.

2. Which of Mary-Lou's possessions did Gwendoline smash in the first book?

Gwen also smeared ink on Darrell's shoes to make the others believe that Darrell had smashed the pen.
