Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what years does the story take place?

Answer: 1941-42

Madeline's first entry was September 26, 1941 and her last entry was July 23, 1942.
2. Where in New York did Madeline and her mother live?

Answer: Long Island, New York

Madeline lived with her mother in a boardinghouse in Long Island, New York. The name of the boardinghouse was "Mrs. Hawkins's Mansion-by-the-Sea". Madeline states in the book, "The name's misleading. Really, it's just a run-down old boardinghouse".
3. Why didn't Madeline live with her father?

Answer: Her father was a lieutenant commander in the navy

We first get clues that Madeline's father worked in the navy in her September 19, 1941 entry, when she said that she had gotten a letter from her father saying that his ship would be leaving to San Francisco soon. And in the October 8, 1941 entry, she tells Johnny Vecchio and Bert Lyman that her father was a lieutenant commander and had been trained to be a navy dive-bomber.
4. Of what clique is Maxine Stone the leader?

Answer: The Star Points

In the October 13, 1941 entry, Madeline says that during lunch Maxine started a group called the "Star Points", and picked the 5 prettiest girls in class (including herself) to be in it. Madeline was not part of the Star Points.
5. In the beginning of the book, what do we notice is an insecurity that Madeline has?

Answer: She has low self-esteem

Madeline would complain to her mom about how she wasn't pretty enough, didn't have enough style, or that she just wasn't good enough. An example would be in the October 9, 1941 entry, when she asked her mom to help her lower her hem on her skirt because she needed more style.

Her mother said she would if Madeline would stop complaining about her lack of style. Another example would be in the October 13, 1941 entry, when she complained about her beauty.
6. Maxine Stone and Johnny Vecchio loved each other.

Answer: False

Madeline and Johnny loved each other. But in the December 19, 1941 entry, Madeline overheard Johnny and Maxine talking about going to the dance together. She got mad at Johnny and didn't talk to him for weeks. But then Johnny finally confronted her and found out why Madeline was mad at him.

He then explained to her the only reason he went with Maxine was because his mom made him. It turned out that Maxine's dad worked for his mother's uncle.
7. Who is Madeline's best female friend?

Answer: Clara

Madeline and Clara did lots of things together. They went to cinemas together, they went shopping together, and they did other girly things together. In fact, Madeline was Clara's first actual friend.
8. In the Epilogue it says that Clara and Theo got married. What do they name their first daughter?

Answer: Maddie

Clara and Theo were in love for a while. Madeline even caught them kissing once. Because Madeline was always there for them and they were all dear friends, Clara and Theo decided to name their first daughter Maddie, which is short for Madeline.
9. When Johnny and Madeline reunited, they dated for how long before getting engaged?

Answer: 2 years

Madeline and Johnny reunited in the summer after their senior year in high school. They dated for 2 years and then got engaged. After they graduated from college, they got married. Madeline became an organizer for the American Red Cross, and Johnny worked for "National Geographic" magazine.
10. What is one thing the character Madeline and the book's author, Mary Pope Osborne, have in common?

Answer: Both their fathers worked in the military

Mary Pope Osborne's father was stationed in New Guinea; Madeline's father was stationed in San Francisco. Mary Pope Osborne states in the "About the Author" section of "My Secret War": "Growing up in the fifties and sixties, my brothers and I often heard stories from our dad about his WWII experiences in New Guinea and stories from my mom about waiting for him on the home front".
