It was Nan and Elsie's special secret. Nan was saving up for the fare to London for when the Queen had her Coronation in June.

Elsie wants to become friends with Laura as she has no friends, and she keeps imagining Laura and her doing ballet together. She also lies to Laura that she also goes to ballet up in London.
