Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many gingerbread people were living in the cookie jar?

Answer: 4

There are four members of the gingerbread family. Their names are Gingerbread Jan, Grandpa Snap, Molasses Moe, and Cinnamon Cindy. However, the names Molasses Moe and Cinnamon Cindy are not mentioned in the book.
2. Why did Gingerbread Jan want to escape the cookie jar?

Answer: It was cold, dark, and boring in the cookie jar.

Gingerbread Jan wanted to live somewhere warm and bright like the oven that she was baked in.
3. What did Grandpa Snap do when Gingerbread Jan said she wanted to escape?

Answer: He told her that escape was impossible.

Grandpa Snap did not think it was possible for Gingerbread Jan to successfully escape the cookie jar. No cookie had ever escaped before. There was only one way out. Somebody had to reach in and take the cookie out . . . but then the cookie would be eaten!
4. What was Gingerbread Jan's first idea for escape?

Answer: She used cookies to build a stairway to the top of the cookie jar.

Gingerbread Jan used cookies to build a stairway. Unfortunately, she ran out of cookies and the stairway was not tall enough to reach the jar's lid. When Gingerbread Jan tried to jump up and push the lid off the jar, the cookie stairs crumbled and fell down. Then Gingerbread Jan fell, too!
5. What did Gingerbread Jan do after her first plan failed?

Answer: She thought of another escape plan.

This smart cookie never gives up!
Gingerbread Jan broke her foot off when she fell from the cookie stairway. She used some jelly from a cookie to stick her foot back on. She saw the jelly was very sticky, so she smeared it on her hands and climbed up the cookie jar.
6. When Gingerbread Jan finally got out of the cookie jar she ran into trouble. Who tried to eat her?

Answer: A hungry baby boy

A hungry boy grabbed Gingerbread and tried to gobble her up! Because Gingerbread Jan was so small, the baby seemed like a giant monster to her. She had to think fast to keep from being eaten.
7. How did Gingerbread Jan get away from the hungry creature?

Answer: She tickled his chin.

Gingerbread Jan tickled the boy's chin. When he laughed he loosened his grip and the cookie girl was able to get away.
8. Gingerbread Jan told a joke to keep the hungry creature busy while her family escaped. What joke did she tell?

Answer: Why didn't the gingerbread man cross the road? He didn't want people to think he was a chicken.

The little boy was very amused by Gingerbread Jan. As she told this joke her family climbed out of the cookie jar using the sticky jelly. After everyone was out of the jar, the family ran out of the kitchen.
9. What happened to the gingerbread family at the end of the book?

Answer: They built a gingerbread house and lived happily ever after.

The family settled down in a nice warm place with plenty of sunshine. They built a cookie cottage and they still live there today.
10. What did Grandpa Snap call Gingerbread Jan at the end of the book?

Answer: A smart cookie

Grandpa Snap was impressed by Gingerbread Jan's clever ideas. He called her a smart cookie, and that is why the title of the book is "Smart Cookie".
