Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I just called you a "landlubber"! What does that mean?

Answer: You are not a sailor.

A landlubber can be someone who is totally unfamiliar with the sea, or a novice seaman. Not exactly used as a compliment, the term is also used to describe a clumsy or stupid person. Me mateys and I use the word "lubber" to insult each other!
2. Captain Bart uses the term "avast" quite often when addressing the pirate crew. What does he mean?

Answer: Stop and pay attention!

Actually, the captain of a pirate ship is democratically elected by the crew. If we really do not want to "Avast", we can just elect a new captain! Captain Bart is a good leader, so I think I will pay attention when he tells me to!
3. "Peter", Captain Bart bellows, "I need you to go to the crow's nest"! Where is the crow's nest on a ship?

Answer: On top of the main mast.

Located in the upper part of the main mast, the crow's nest is the best way to look for approaching vessels. From time to time Captain Bart asks me to climb up there and look out over the ocean because I can see the farthest of anyone on the ship. I have to admit that it's a high climb, and not my favorite task.
4. "Thar she blows", Captain Bart yells. What have the pirates just seen?

Answer: Whales

Traditionally this is a call that is heard from whaling ships, but we pirates use it too. Whales present a real danger to any ship sharing their water, but if we have an opportunity to catch a whale we take it! There is profit to be made, even if it isn't our usual booty!
5. When a pirate tells you to "gangway", what should you do?

Answer: Get out of the way!

Normally a gangway is an opening in the railing of a ship where the gangplank fits. We use the gangplank to board or leave the ship; we also use it to board enemy ships when we are fighting at sea. Typically when a pirate yells "gangway", it's because he wants you out of his way!
6. "Come on Peter! Show a leg"! What time of the day is it on the pirate ship?

Answer: Dawn

We have wakemen who stay up all night and watch the ship, but I am not one of them. I do have to get up at dawn, however, and start my day. A cabin boy's work is never done!
7. We are approaching another ship. "Peter", Captain Bart whispers. "Avast! I think it is a runner"! What is a "runner"?

Answer: Smuggler

While some people would tell you that there isn't much difference between a smuggler and a pirate, there is! Smugglers bring goods into a country illegally and in secret, usually to avoid paying high governmental taxes on certain items. We pirates raid and attack ships in the open sea in order to collect booty. That means that we prey on the smuggler's ships.
8. The last time we captured a ship, Captain Bart reminded us that no one likes a "lily-livered" pirate. What did he mean?

Answer: Don't be faint of heart.

It just will not do for any pirate to be weak and cowardly. I hope to be with Captain Bart for a long time, and work my way up to learn other jobs and responsibilities. Maybe someday I can be his quartermaster. Cowards? They go to Davy Jones' Locker really fast on a pirate ship!
9. What does a pirate call the ropes that are used to tie things?

Answer: Lanyards

We pirates can use a lanyard for a variety of reasons. It helps to hold the rigging taunt, and it is even what we call the rope that is used to fire the cannon! I also use a lanyard to secure my knife around my neck. That way I will know where it is when I need it!
10. "Heave-away", calls Captain Bart. What is it time to do?

Answer: Pull up anchor.

Well, it's time for another adventure. Captain Bart has mentioned something about a place called Tortuga. Cast off, me hearties! That is, let's go friends!
