Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the area on which the game of soccer is played?

Answer: Pitch

A soccer pitch is rectangular in shape. Its exact dimensions are allowed to vary by certain amounts depending on whether it hosts international or non-international matches.
2. What type of football is soccer also known as?

Answer: Association football

As of 2017, association football was played by over 250 million people worldwide.
3. What is the maximum number of players each team can legally field at the start of a game of soccer?

Answer: Eleven

One of the responsibilities of the match referee is to count the number of players on each team before the match is started.
4. Soccer matches are scored via the number of ____ that each team achieves.

Answer: goals

A team scores if they manage to get the ball between the posts and under the crossbar of their opponents' goal. The score is also referred to as a goal.
5. There is only one player on each team who is legally allowed to touch the ball with his hands whilst it is in play - what is this player generally referred to as?

Answer: Goalkeeper

Yes, it is only the goalkeeper who is allowed to handle the ball whilst it is in play, but ONLY within his own goal area!
6. Which area of London is home to the English national soccer stadium?

Answer: Wembley

The original Wembley Stadium, which was opened in 1923, was demolished in 2002-2003 to make way for the brand new stadium, which opened in 2007.
7. What is the name of the international soccer tournament that is contested every four years?

Answer: World Cup

The first ever soccer World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, with the host nation defeating their South American neighbours Argentina to win the trophy.
8. Three of these men have represented their country in soccer, however one has not, as he is a tennis player. Can you identify the infiltrator?

Answer: Andy Murray

Diego Maradona represented Argentina between 1977 and 1994, and captained his national team to their 1986 World Cup victory in Mexico. Cristiano Ronaldo began representing Portugal in 2003, and has won multiple awards due to his footballing prowess. Andres Iniesta began representing Spain in 2006, and scored the only (and therefore winning) goal in the 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands.

Although a keen supporter of Hibernian Football Club, Scotsman Andy Murray has never represented his country in soccer, instead preferring to win multiple tournaments on the tennis court.
9. Which of the following is NOT a method of restarting play when the ball goes out of play?

Answer: Scrum

A throw-in is awarded when the ball crosses the touchline (one of the two longer boundaries of the pitch). A corner kick is awarded when the ball crosses the goal line (one of the two shorter boundaries of the pitch) having last been touched by a defending player. If the ball has not gone out of play, but the referee stops play for any other reason (e.g. a player is seriously injured), this is still classed as the ball being "out of play", and the match is restarted by means of a dropped-ball, where the referee drops the ball in between two players, one from each team.

There is no such thing as a scrum in soccer - a scrum is a method of restarting play in rugby union and rugby league.
10. What does the match referee blow to indicate the end of the match?

Answer: Whistle

The referee will also blow his whistle to start the match, to stop play when a foul has been committed, and to restart the match if a free-kick or penalty is to be taken.
