Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning, when the Darling children dreamed of Neverland, what did Michael dream about?

Answer: Lagoons flying over a flamingo

In the mind of each Darling child, and indeed in the minds of many other children of the world, existed a unique Neverland. Each Neverland was more or less an island, but had different features for each child when that child visited the island in their dreams. John's Neverland had a lagoon with flamingos flying over it and an over-turned boat in the sand. Michael's Neverland had a flamingo with lagoons flying over it, and a wigwam where friends visited at night. Wendy's Neverland had a house made of leaves sewn together and a pet wolf for company.
2. Who woke Mrs. Darling the night Peter lost his shadow?

Answer: Tinker Bell

One evening, when Nana had the night off, Mrs. Darling put her children to bed and fell asleep in a chair by the fire. When all were asleep, Peter Pan and Tinker Bell arrived in the nursery. The light Tinker Bell made when she flew around the room woke Mrs. Darling who screamed and startled Peter. Upon hearing the scream, Nana raced into the nursery to chase Peter out the window, catching his shadow in her teeth. Nana wanted to hang the shadow outside the window where Peter could easily get it, but instead Mrs. Darling rolled it up and placed it in a drawer for safekeeping until Peter returned.
3. After Peter unsuccessfully tried to reattach his shadow using a bar of soap, how did Wendy reunite them?

Answer: She sewed his shadow to his feet.

One Friday night, Mr. and Mrs. Darling went across the street for a dinner party. Mr. Darling had gotten upset while getting ready for the party and had taken his anger out on Nana, chaining her in the backyard. This meant that Wendy, John, and Michael were alone in the nursery when Peter and Tinker Bell arrived. Tink found Peter's shadow in the drawer, and he immediately went to work trying to reattach it.

At first he thought it would reattach itself and when that didn't work he tried putting it on with soap from the bathroom.

When the soap failed he sat crying on the nursery floor, waking Wendy. Wendy was able to reunite Peter with his shadow by sewing it onto his feet.
4. Peter didn't understand what a kiss was, so when Wendy asked him for one, what did he give her instead?

Answer: Acorn button

Peter was very pleased with himself after he was reunited with his shadow, which made Wendy angry. She hid under her covers until Peter talked her out with compliments. Wendy said she would give him a kiss if he liked, but since he didn't know what a kiss was, he held out his hand.

Not wanting to disappoint him, Wendy put a thimble in his hand. Peter then asked Wendy if he should give her a kiss, and when she said yes, he handed her an acorn button. She put in on a string around her neck, which would later serve to save her life.
5. According to Peter, where do fairies come from?

Answer: Laughs of babes

Wendy asked Peter about himself and he explained that he once heard his mother and father talking about what he would be when he was grown up. He didn't want to grow up so he ran away to Kensington Gardens, where he lived with the fairies. Wendy loved the idea of fairies and asked Peter more about them. Peter explained that when the first baby laughed its first laugh, that laugh broke into a thousand pieces which became the fairies.

He also explained that each child should have its own fairy, but that each time a child says "I don't believe in fairies", a fairy dies.
6. In the book, a crocodile swallowed the right hand of Captain Hook after he lost it in a fight with Peter Pan.

Answer: True

Before the children reached Neverland, Captain James Hook walked around the island of Neverland searching for the Lost Boys, who were themselves looking for Peter Pan. Captain Hook and Peter Pan were enemies. In times past, they were in a fight that ended with Pan cutting off Hook's right hand and throwing it into the mouth of a crocodile who happened to be swimming past. With the taste of Hook's arm, the crocodile developed a liking for him, and followed him around the island in search of the rest of him. Luckily for Hook, the crocodile had accidentally swallowed a clock which ticked on and on, a warning when the crocodile came close.
7. What was the name of the redskin tribe in Neverland to which Tiger Lily belonged?

Answer: Piccaninny

While Hook and his pirate mates followed the Lost Boys around the island, the redskins followed the pirates. The two groups did not get along any better than the pirates and Pan's Lost Boys did. The Piccaninny tribe, those redskins who lived on the island of Neverland, were headed by Chief Great Big Little Panther.

Their princess was Tiger Lily. Following the redskins around the island were the beasts of Neverland: lions, tigers, bears, and a ticking crocodile. None of the groups, the Lost Boys, pirates, redskins, or beasts, caught up to the group before them, as they were all walking at the same speed around the island.
8. Which one of the Lost Boys shot Wendy out of the sky when she flew by overhead?

Answer: Tootles

Before leaving the Darlings' home in London, Peter Pan had taught Wendy, John, and Michael how to fly. He told them to think "lovely, wonderful thoughts" and he sprinkled them with fairy dust (which had been left on his hand from carrying Tinker Bell most of the way there from Neverland).

The group became separated when they reached Neverland, and Wendy became lost, flying with only the jealous Tinker Bell as her guide. When she flew close to the home of the Lost Boys, Tinker Bell told Tootles that Peter wanted Wendy dead. Tootles shot Wendy in the chest with an arrow, and she fell out of the sky.

She was saved from death as the arrow hit the acorn button that Peter had given her instead of hitting her heart. To keep her safe, the boys built a small house around her instead of taking her down through their trees into the house under the ground where they lived.

She became their mother, a caring figure that none of the boys had known before.
9. How did Wendy get off Marooner's Rock after she and Peter were stranded there in the lagoon?

Answer: Flew using Michael's kite

After the Darlings had been on the island for several weeks, Wendy and the boys went to Mermaid's Lagoon to play in the water. While they were there, two pirates, Mr. Smee and Starkey, came into the lagoon with Tiger Lily. She had been tied with rope around her hands and ankles, and the pirates left her on Marooner's Rock to drown when the tide came in. Peter saved her by imitating Hook's voice and convincing the pirates to let her go.

The real Hook then arrived, and a fight broke out between the Lost Boys and the pirates.

At the end, Wendy and a wounded Pan were left alone on Marooner's Rock with the tide coming in. Wendy escaped, by flying away on Michael's kite, which had been lost days before and made its way to the Rock in the wind. Peter was able to escape in a bird's nest that was floating on the lagoon.
10. Hook hated Peter most of all because he was jealous of Peter's youthful appearance.

Answer: False

It was well known that Captain Hook hated Peter Pan, and that Peter hated Hook too. But Hook didn't hate Peter for his youthful appearance, or for his courage, or even for cutting off his arm and feeding it to the crocodile. In fact, Hook rather liked his iron hook, even more than his flesh hand. Hook hated Peter most of all for his cockiness, and Peter was perhaps the cockiest person Hook had ever met.

While Hook wanted to capture the Lost Boys, and his pirates fought them on many occasions, his real target was always Peter Pan.
11. In the book, how did the pirates get the Lost Boys to their ship after capturing them outside the house under the ground?

Answer: Carried them in Wendy's house

One night, the Night of Nights, Wendy, John, and Michael decided it was time to go home. Not wanting to leave the Lost Boys without a mother, Wendy invited them to return to London and live with her family there. Since Peter had saved Tiger Lily, the redskins had become friends with the Lost Boys, and on this night they were guarding the house under the ground where the boys and Wendy lived.

When plans were made to leave the island, Tinker Bell was sent out of the home in the ground to tell the redskins of the plan.

As she reached the ground, Hook and his pirates attacked. They tricked the Lost Boys into thinking the redskins had won the fight, and as the boys came up out of the trees, they were captured and tied together. To get them to the pirate ship, they were carried in Wendy's house, a small building the boys had made for her the first day she arrived on the island.
12. Who did Peter pretend to be to rescue the Lost Boys and Wendy from the Jolly Roger pirate ship?

Answer: Crocodile

On the pirate ship, the boys were lined up by Captain Hook to walk the plank and drown in the sea. Wendy had been tied to the mast to watch the event. Before any boy could be forced to walk the plank, however, a ticking sound was heard in the water, scaring Hook, who was sure the crocodile had come at last to eat the rest of him. But, it wasn't the crocodile who was making the ticking noise, it was Peter himself.

The clock inside the crocodile had stopped ticking, so to protect himself on his walk through the trees Peter had started making a ticking sound to warn off other animals.

He was still making the ticking sound when he got to the pirate ship, which allowed him to climb aboard without a fight. Peter and the Lost Boys were able to defeat the pirates who had been caught off guard by the ticking. Hook died in the fight, after being kicked off the ship by Peter into the silent crocodile's waiting mouth.
13. How did Mr. Darling punish himself for chaining up Nana on the night the children left for Neverland?

Answer: He lived in Nana's kennel.

Mr. Darling felt so awful about what he did to Nana the night the children disappeared that he climbed into her kennel on all fours and refused to leave until his children came home. He spent the nights in the kennel on the nursery room floor, and during the day he and the kennel went to work. Each morning Mrs. Darling would put the kennel in a taxi, and each night she would take him out and put him back in the nursery.

It was in the kennel that the children found their father when they arrived back at their home in London.

They had been gone for many months, and at first were very confused to find their father asleep in Nana's bed.
14. What song was Mrs. Darling playing on the piano when her children returned home?

Answer: Home, Sweet Home

To help Mr. Darling fall asleep, Mrs. Darling went into the children's day-nursery to play a song on the piano. When the children arrived back at their house they heard their mother playing "Home, Sweet Home". Thinking to surprise her with their arrival, they climbed into their beds, so that when their mother came back into the nursery she would see them there.

When Mrs. Darling came into the room, she thought her children were just another dream, and it wasn't until they ran into her arms that she realized her children were home at last. Wendy explained to her parents about the Lost Boys, and it was decided that they could stay with the Darlings. Only Peter refused to stay, saying he did not want to grow up and be a man.
15. What was the name of Wendy's granddaughter who left with Peter for Neverland at the end of the book?

Answer: Margaret

Time passed and Wendy grew older, too old to return to Neverland again. Peter had come back for her the year after her return to London, to take her to Neverland for spring cleaning and to be his mother for a week and take care of him. He forgot to come the following year and returned only once more during her childhood, as he lost track of time.

When Wendy had a child of her own, a daughter named Jane, Peter returned once more, and he took Jane away, as his new mother, for a week for spring cleaning in Neverland. Jane too grew older, and had a daughter of her own.

When Peter returned for the last time, he took Jane's daughter Margaret with him to Neverland, for a week of spring cleaning.
