Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What hand-held rectangular items have small buttons on top?

Answer: Remote controls

Remote controls usually use something called infrared light to control things like televisions, stereos, and DVD players. The infrared light is not visible to humans, but the appliances can receive the signals. Remote controls operate things like power (on/off), volume, channel, and other functions of the appliances.

The appliance responds properly because the remote sends a different light pulse signal for each function.
2. What non-animal living thing can be found in many living rooms, especially in houses where people with "green thumbs" live?

Answer: Plants

Some people enjoy putting plants in their living rooms. Plants take carbon dioxide out of the air, and replace it with oxygen. When they help to provide clean oxygen in the air, they give us something that we all need to help us stay healthy. A person who can keep a plant healthy is sometimes said to have a "green thumb".

Their thumb doesn't really turn green, though. That's just a nickname that is given so that the rest of us know that they are able to keep plants alive.
3. Which of these chores is NOT one that you would usually have to do in the living room?

Answer: Make the bed

People usually don't have beds in their living rooms, so that isn't a chore that is done in the living room in most cases. Chores do need to be done to keep the house clean, though. These little jobs don't usually take much time, and can be done in one session. Things like vacuuming, dusting, straightening cushions and mats, putting away toys, and washing windows are all small chores that may be done in a living room.
4. What piece of furniture in the living room is NOT designed for humans to rest any part of their bodies on?

Answer: Shelves

In the living room, shelves usually hold books, figurines, plants, or other small decorative things. An ottoman is a footstool, designed to rest the feet on when you are sitting on another piece of furniture. Sometimes, they are hollow with a lid, like a box for storage.

A love seat is a piece of furniture that is designed for two people to sit on. It is like a sofa/couch/chesterfield with a back and arm rests at each end, but it is only wide enough for two seats.
5. What is sometimes on the ceiling in living rooms in warmer places, put there to help move the air around?

Answer: Fans

Fans are usually powered by electricity. They quickly turn to create an air current that helps to cool the people who are in the room. Fans are sometimes mounted on the ceiling, but they can also be smaller, and designed to stand on the floor or a tabletop, or even smaller to be held in your hand. Fans can also be found in other rooms in the house like bedrooms and kitchens.
6. Which of the following would you NOT use to keep the sun from coming in your living room window?

Answer: Wind chimes

Wind chimes can be hung in windows, but they are designed to be in open windows. This lets the wind through to make their sounds, but it also lets the sun shine in. Shutters are hinged panels that are pulled across the outside or the inside of the window to block light. Curtains are made of cloth and are pulled across the window to shade the light. Blinds can be horizontal (running across the window) or vertical (running up and down the window).

They are designed to open and close to let the light in when they are open, and to keep the light out when they are closed.
7. What usually hangs on the wall to tell time in the living room?

Answer: Clock

When people want to tell the time in the living room, they will place a clock on the wall. Sometimes, a clock is placed on a table. Clocks can have hands (analog), or just number displays (digital). You can also usually find clocks in kitchens and bedrooms.
8. End tables are sometimes placed beside chairs and sofas/couches/chesterfields to hold drinks, phones, and other small items that are used while sitting in your living room.

Answer: True

End tables are usually at about the same height as the furniture so that you can easily reach whatever is on them. They are called end tables because they are placed at the end of couches/sofas/chesterfields, or beside chairs. A shorter and longer table that sits in front of the furniture is usually called a coffee table.
9. If people are enjoying a drink in the living room, what do they usually put under their cups or mugs to protect the table when they set their drinks down?

Answer: Coasters

Coasters are small mats that are just a bit bigger than your mug or cup. They can be made of wood, plastic, glass, cardboard, and other materials. Their main purpose is to catch drips and protect the table underneath.
10. Which of these are not usually found in the living room, even if there is a pet in the house?

Answer: Coat closets

Coat closets (or coat racks) are usually found near an entrance, and are not usually in living rooms. If there is a pet in the house, there could well be toys for dogs, scratching posts for cats, or cages for birds found in the living room.
