Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although written first, this was the third book in the series. We have met the Professor before - but who is he?

Answer: Digory

Digory and Polly were with Aslan when Narnia was created, and Digory took home an apple from a special tree from that land. This apple cured his mother. The core was planted in the garden, and when the resulting tree fell down many years later, he had it made into a wardrobe. It was through this wardrobe that Lucy found Narnia.
2. To the nearest two or three years, when was this book set?

Answer: 1941

The very first paragraph of the book places this in a time-zone, as the children were sent to the Professor's house to escape the bombing in London. This could have been any time from 1939 to 1945, as London children were evacuated in the autumn of 1939, again in spring 1940 and then in the latter years when the 'doodlebugs' started appearing.
3. What colour was Mr Tumnus' muffler?

Answer: red

Lucy had been hiding in the wardrobe while playing 'Hide and Seek' with her brothers and sister, and came across Narnia. Mr Tumnus was the first creature she met there, as he was walking home with armloads of parcels, an umbrella and a warm red woolen muffler.
4. Mr Tumnus invited Lucy to tea - what did he say was on the menu?

Answer: toast, sardines and cake

Mr Tumnus admits to Lucy later that he is in the pay of the White Witch and was trying to kidnap her. He was to become her greatest friend, and we also meet him in the book 'The Horse and his Boy'.
5. Mr Tumnus got a little confused about where Lucy came from - what did he call her homeland?

Answer: Spare Oom

He thought Lucy lived in the city of War Drobe in the country of Spare Oom, misunderstanding Lucy when she told him she came into Narnia from the wardrobe in the spare room.
6. When he found Narnia, what did Edmund think the light from the lamp post was?

Answer: the wardrobe door opening by itself

He had shut the wardrobe door behind himself, and then regretted it as he was stuck in a dark cupboard; when he saw the light and felt the cold he thought the door opened by itself and was relieved.
7. What shape was the box of Turkish Delight?

Answer: round

It was tied with a green ribbon, and contained 'several pounds of the best Turkish Delight' - Edmund ate it all.
8. Peter and Susan consulted the Professor because they were worried about Lucy. Which of the following was not given by the Professor as an indication that Lucy was telling the truth?

Answer: that the wardrobe was made from wood grown from an apple grown in Narnia

The Professor would not have told anyone that the wardrobe was built from wood from a tree which had been planted from an apple core from another world. In 'The Last Battle' all the children but Susan were with both Polly and Digory (the Professor) but at this stage the children had not had their adventure and compared notes with the older people.
9. When all four children found Narnia together, who was the first to apologise to Lucy?

Answer: Peter

Peter apologised before they even left the wardrobe for the wood. It wasn't until Edmund tried giving directions to the lamp post that Peter and Susan knew for certain that he had been lying.
10. Who signed the note which had been left on Mr Tumnus' broken door?

Answer: the Captain of the Secret Police

Maugrim was the Captain of the Secret Police; Peter was to defeat him in single combat later in the book. Please note: when the book was first published, the Captain's name was Maugrim and is still such in books being printed and sold in the UK. The US versions call him Fenris ULF.
11. Who led the children to the Beaver?

Answer: a Robin

The children decided that the Robin had to be a 'goodie' because in all the stories they had read robins were friendly.
12. After saying 'Hush!' what is the next thing Mr Beaver says to the children?

Answer: 'Are you the Sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve?'

Mr Beaver said all of these things before they continued on their journey to his house.
13. Which of the following was not in the Beavers' house?

Answer: pictures

'There were no books or pictures, and instead of beds there were bunks, like on board ship, built into the wall. And there were hams and strings of onions hanging from the roof, and against the walls were gum boots and oilskins and hatchets and pairs of shears and spades and trowels and things for carrying mortar in and fishing-rods and fishing-nets and sacks.'
14. Who asked the Beavers: 'She won't turn him into stone too?'?

Answer: Edmund

It was shortly after this that Edmund snuck out of the house and made his way to the Witch's house.
15. What did Edmund do to the stone lion in the Witch's castle?

Answer: he drew a pair of glasses and a moustache on it

He was scared of it at first, as it was so lifelike; after he drew on it it still looked so sad and noble that Edmund got no satisfaction out of jeering at it.
16. When Edmund told the Witch about Aslan, what did she do?

Answer: ordered the sledge be made ready

. . . and she ordered the harness without bells - presumably to sneak up on the other children and the Beavers.
17. Father Christmas' robe was bright red, and described as bright as - what?

Answer: holly berries

This, of course, was not a man earning extra money at Christmas! This was the real Father Christmas!
18. What present did Susan receive?

Answer: a horn and a bow and arrows

Peter received a sword and shield (with a red lion on it). Susan received a horn and a bow and arrows. Lucy received a small bottle of magic cordial and a dagger. Edmund did not receive a present as he was not with them at the time.
19. Spring was coming to Narnia, but what was the first indication of this that Edmund noticed?

Answer: the snow was wetter

Then he noticed that he was feeling less cold, that it was getting foggy. Then he noticed that the sledge was finding it harder to move as it kept jolting against stones. Then he noticed the sound of dripping, and then running, water. Green patches appeared and grew, and then there was the cheerful colour of flowers. Then there was a chorus of birdsong.
20. What name did Aslan give Peter when he knighted him?

Answer: Sir Peter Wolfs-Bane

Aslan's advice was that Peter should not to forget to clean his sword.
21. How did the Witch plan to defeat Aslan and the old prophecy?

Answer: she would kill Edmund

Edmund was saved in the nick of time, and taken to Aslan, where they spoke together and he became one of Aslan's men.
22. After talking with the Witch Aslan moved camp - but to where?

Answer: the Fords of Beruna

They were at the Stone Table when Aslan met with the Witch; this area was to become Aslan's How ('Prince Caspian'). Cair Paravel was the castle in which the children were crowned at the end of the book.
23. Four creatures stood at the corners of the Stone Table while the White Witch killed Aslan. What were they?

Answer: four Hags

The stone knife the Witch used is next seen in the closing chapters of 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' when the ship's company find it on Aslan's Table.
24. Aslan was bound hand and paw when the Witch killed him - but who bit through the ropes afterwards?

Answer: a horde of mice

Because of this, mice were transformed into Talking Beasts. In 'Prince Caspian' and 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' we meet my favourite character, Reepicheep, the Chief Mouse with a giant-sized courage.
25. Aslan organised the creatures who had been stone statues in the Witch's house in order to get everyone back to the battle. One of the creatures was delighted by his words - which one?

Answer: the lion

Aslan had used the words, 'us lions' and the other lion was delighted, running around 'pretending to be very busy but really in order to say to everyone he met, 'Did you hear what he said? *Us Lions*. That's means him and me. *Us Lions*. That's what I like about Aslan. No side, no stand-off-ishness. *Us Lions*. That meant him and me.' At least he went on saying this until Aslan had loaded him up with three dwarfs, one dryad, two rabbits and a hedgehog. That steadied him a bit.'
