Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the famous electric-type, yellow-coloured Pokémon that follows the protagonist, Ash Ketchum, around and refuses to enter a Poké ball?

Answer: Pikachu

Pikachu is perhaps the most famous Pokémon in the whole franchise as he was there right at the beginning, as Ash began his adventures as a trainer around Kanto. Pikachu can evolve into Raichu but Ash's Pikachu stubbornly refuses to undergo the change and the relationship between the two of them is stronger for it.

Much later it is found out that Pikachu itself is an evolved form, descending from Pichu.
2. Which of the following Pokémon aids, or maybe hinders, Jessie and James of Team Rocket in their nasty day-to-day dealings?

Answer: Meowth

In the anime series of 'Pokémon', the Meowth of Team Rocket stands out because of his ability to speak English. This introduces an interesting dynamic between humans and Pokémon but unfortunately Jessie and James are a rather hopeless pair, and even with the help of Meowth, their evil plans just don't come off.
3. Which Pokémon of the original 150 would be weak to the water-based attacks of the charming but fierce Squirtle?

Answer: Charmander

Charmander is a fire-type Pokémon and as you'd expect, the water-based attacks of Squirtle are going to be very damaging to such a Pokémon. It is not all bad for fire-types though, as the likes of Charmander are strong against grass-types such as Bulbasaur, Bellsprout and Roselia. Charmander's first evolution is Charmeleon who in turn evolves into the very impressive flying/fire-type Pokémon, Charizard.
4. Bug catchers are only really interested in one type of Pokémon, bugs! Which of these would a bug catcher be most interested in owning?

Answer: Butterfree

Butterfree is the most evolved stage of the Caterpie-Metapod-Butterfree family and compared to its less evolved predecessors it has the ability to fly, just like butterflies in the real world. Another family of bug Pokémon, which is very similar to the Butterfree family, is that of Beedrill; Beedrill is evolved from the cocoon-like Pokémon, Kakuna, which itself is an evolution of the rather weak, Weedle.
5. Diglett is a Pokémon that is well known for its ability to tunnel underground. What is the evolved form of Diglett?

Answer: Dugtrio

Diglett is a mole species of Pokémon that makes use of ground-type moves such as dig and earthquake as well as normal-type moves such as scratch and slash. When Diglett evolves into Dugtrio, the physical transformation is easy to see as one small mole becomes three larger, more intimidating moles. Dugtrio uses largely the same offensive and defensive moves as Diglett, but as a stronger Pokémon the effect of these moves is greater.
6. Some Pokémon have the advantage of flying high in the sky, peering down upon their foes below. Which of the following Pokémon does NOT have the ability to fly?

Answer: Electabuzz

Electabuzz, a Pokémon that belongs to the electric type, is not particularly well known. It is a Pokémon that certainly cannot fly, unlike the aforementioned Pidgeot, Fearow and Farfetch'd, but manages quite reasonably without this ability. In terms of the anime, Electabuzz has made a few appearances here and there but none of them have been of great importance. That said, his evolution from Elekid and his evolution into Electivire has been seen in the show.
7. Many species of Pokémon can be found in the murky depths of caves. Which of these is an example of a Pokémon most likely to be found in a cave?

Answer: Zubat

For anybody who has played the 'Pokémon' games on any of the Game Boy consoles, you'll be well aware of Zubat. Trying to get through a cave without a "repel" can be extremely frustrating as you encounter this bat-like Pokémon over and over again. In the anime, dual poison/flying-type Zubat was one of Brock's Pokémon; Brock later oversaw its evolution into Golbat and further still into Crobat.
8. Which rather peculiar, supposedly coconut species of Pokémon is known for being the subject of a jingle along with Oddish?

Answer: Exeggutor

In my view this is one of the most bizarre Pokémon out of the original 150; it supposedly belongs to the coconut species yet it has evolved from Exeggcute, a Pokémon belonging to the egg species! I am not sure if this is an inside joke between the creator of the franchise, Satoshi Tajiri, and his pals or if Exeggutor is a very serious creation! If this is not weird enough then you really need to witness the Exeggutor/Oddish jingle from the short movie 'Pikachu's Vacation'.

The sheer absurdity of it just makes me laugh every time I see it!
9. Out of the following "one" of a kind legendary Pokémon, which of these is both a flying-type and an ice-type?

Answer: Articuno

Articuno is my personal favourite of the three legendary bird Pokémon from Generation I. Its icy elegance makes it a very aesthetically pleasing Pokémon to look at in the anime as well as in the games for both Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. The other two constituent members of the Generation I legendary birds are Zapdos, which has electric-type attacks in addition to its ability to fly, and Moltres, a dual flying-type and fire-type Pokémon.

My clue of "one" in the question relates to the endings of each of the birds' names: uno, dos and tres (one, two and three in Spanish).
10. What is the name of the legendary Pokémon, the star of the first ever Pokémon film, that is one of the strongest species to be found in the Kanto region?

Answer: Mewtwo

In terms of Generation I Pokémon, the legendary Mewtwo really is THE one to own; the outstanding attacking ability of this psychic-type leaves all but the very best of Pokémon extremely vulnerable. Mewtwo was at the centre of the first film in the Pokémon franchise, the title of which is 'Pokémon the First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back'.

This film made the character known to a wider audience and with the exception of Pikachu is possibly the best known of the Pokémon from the early days of this very successful anime.
