This was done so that none of that vowel might slip in, accidentally; and many did try to do so!"

This type of literature is known as a lipogram.

Actually, it took an amazing 50 years before a can opener was invented. The cans were invented in 1813, while then can opener was patented in 1858. Its inventor, Ezra Warner from Connecticut, devised it as a handy tool, but it actually could not leave the store! A store clerk had to open each can before they left the store!
