Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Adam mean in Hebrew?

Answer: Man

The first time we see the name Adam used is in Genesis 2:20b, "But for Adam no suitable helper was found." Before this he is just called "the man."
2. Adam and Eve's third son was named Seth. What does Seth mean in Hebrew?

Answer: Appointed

Seth is first mentioned in Genesis 4:25, "Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying 'God has granted me another child In place of Abel, since Cain killed him."

Seth was 912 years old when he died.
3. Seth was the father of Enosh. What does the Hebrew name Enosh mean?

Answer: Mortal

Enosh is first mentioned in Genesis 4:26a, "Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh." Seth was 105 years old when Enosh was born according to Genesis 5.
4. Enosh had a son named Kenan. What does Kenan mean?

Answer: Sorrow

According to Genesis 5:9, Enosh had Kenan when he was 90. Kenan was 910 when he died according to 5:14.
5. Kenan's son Mahalalel's name means "The blessed God". What part of the name gives us 'God'?

Answer: El

El means God in Hebrew, as in 'GabriEl', 'MichaEl', and 'ELijah'. Elohim is the plural form of the word. In the Bible, Mahalalel lived to be 895.
6. Who was the son of Mahalalel whose name means "coming down"?

Answer: Jared

Jared means "shall come down." Mahalalel was 65 when Jared was born. Jared lived to be 962 years old according to Genesis 5:20.
7. Jared was the father of Enoch. What does Enoch mean?

Answer: Teaching

Jared was 162 years old when Enoch was born. He was 962 years old when he died.
8. Enoch fathered Methuselah. What does Methuselah mean?

Answer: His death shall bring

Some sites also give his name meaning "man of the dart." There's a gene called the Methuselah gene (aka mth gene) that causes longer life spans in people who have it. "His death shall bring" was significant as, after Methuselah died, the Great Flood came.
9. What does Methuselah's son Lamech's name mean?

Answer: The despairing

There were two Lamechs in Genesis. They were very different from each other as one was proud of the people he killed. The two were cousins.
10. We are at the last question. I hope it brought you "comforts." Now it is time to "rest." Who was the son of the Genesis 5 Lamech whose name means "rest, comfort?"

Answer: Noah

Noah was the man in Genesis 6 who built an ark for the Flood in Genesis 7. His wife was not named but his sons were Ham, Shem, Japheth.

Do you want someone to reveal the message?

I Noah guy who can. (Corny joke over).

Here is the list:
Adam - man
Seth - appointed
Enosh - mortal
Kenan - sorrow
Mahalalel - the blessed God
Jared - shall come down
Enoch - teaching
Methuselah - his death shall bring
Lamech - the despairing
Noah - rest, comfort

When I look at these names as a Bible-believing Christian I see the following message when words are added: Man (is) appointed mortal sorrow. (But) The blessed God shall come down teaching (that) his death shall bring the despairing rest and comfort. (This is a Christian view of a message found in these names. Of course not everyone may believe it as perhaps throughout the years the meanings could have changed).
